Xiamen University

Experience world-class education at Xiamen University, where cutting-edge chemistry and marine science research meets breathtaking coastal scenery and generous international scholarships.

Xiamen University sits at the foot of green mountains, facing the open sea. That setting alone might make you stop scrolling. But the scenery is just one part of a larger story — a story about one of China’s most respected research universities, and why more international students are choosing it every year.

Think of it like Oxford’s coastal cousin, but rooted in a very different cultural tradition. And honestly? That’s what makes it worth your attention.

The Founding Story of Xiamen University Is Unlike Any Other in China

In 1921, a Singapore-based businessman named Tan Kah Kee donated the equivalent of four million dollars to establish a university in his hometown. This made Xiamen University the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. That’s not just a historical footnote. It shapes the institution’s identity to this day.

Tan Kah Kee believed education could rebuild a nation. His vision was ambitious, even radical for the time. In fact, at the 1926 Sesquicentennial International Exposition in Philadelphia, Amoy University — the institution’s original name — was selected as one of five institutions to represent China’s higher education system.

So from the very beginning, this was a university that looked outward. That global orientation never really went away.

What You’ll Actually Study at Xiamen University

The academic range here is broad. XMU is structured into six academic divisions, including 35 schools and colleges, as well as 17 research institutes. This covers 12 disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, arts, and interdisciplinary studies.

In other words, it’s a comprehensive research university — more like a University of California campus than a narrowly focused tech institute.

For students wondering what the university does best, the answer is clear. XMU ranks among ESI’s global top 1% in 19 disciplines, with chemistry, materials science, and engineering in ESI’s global top 1‰. That’s a small and selective group worldwide.

Xiamen University’s Strongest Academic Fields

Chemistry and marine science are arguably the flagship disciplines. But the reach goes further. According to EduRank, Xiamen University ranks 12th in Asia Pacific for Chemistry via the Nature Index, and also holds strong positions in engineering, biology, environmental science, and computer science — including AI and machine learning.

Transition to economics? That’s strong too. Xiamen University has one of China’s oldest and most respected economics programs. For context, the School of Law was established in June 1926, with departments covering law, politics, and economics. That’s nearly a century of continuity.

Campus Life: Hills, Sea, and Everything In Between

Here’s something that surprises people. Xiamen University is consistently ranked among the most beautiful university campuses in all of Asia — not just China. XMU campuses sit around Xiamen Bay on the western coast, with views of green hills and open sea. They rank among the world’s most beautiful campuses.

The main Siming Campus covers 167 hectares on the southern tip of Xiamen Island. It sits at the foothills of mountains, facing the ocean, surrounded by Xiamen Bay. There’s a sandy beach nearby. The buildings follow what’s called the “Kah Kee architectural style” — a distinctive Chinese-Western hybrid that you won’t find anywhere else.

Compare this to, say, a landlocked European university. The difference in daily atmosphere is significant. Students here can walk to the ocean. Research labs sit a few minutes from the shoreline. That physical environment shapes how people live and think.

There are also three campuses in mainland China: Siming, Zhangzhou, and Xiang’an. The Xiang’an Campus hosts over 10,000 students from ten schools, including the Medical College, School of Life Sciences, and the School of Aerospace Engineering.

Studying at Xiamen University as an International Student

XMU currently hosts nearly 3,000 international students from over 100 countries. That’s a community worth mentioning. Students from Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas are all represented. The international experience here isn’t superficial.

The university has also built a remarkable global network. XMU has signed inter-institutional cooperation agreements with 277 universities worldwide and has established substantive partnerships with 54 prestigious international institutions. It also leads the university consortium of the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road.”

For English speakers, there are programs taught in English at the graduate level. XMU enrolls master’s students in English-medium programs including Marine Affairs, Chemical Engineering, and Urban and Regional Planning. More options exist at the doctoral level. Chinese proficiency is generally required for undergraduate study, but many programs provide language support for new arrivals.

Cost of living is another point worth addressing. Monthly living expenses — including accommodation, food, and personal expenses — typically range from CNY 2,500 to 4,000 (approximately USD 380 to 610). For a university of this caliber in a coastal city with good infrastructure, that’s remarkably affordable. Compare that to a semester in London, Boston, or even certain Australian cities, and the math speaks for itself.

Scholarships at Xiamen University Worth Knowing About

Funding opportunities are more accessible than many students realize. Available scholarships include Chinese Government Scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarships, Fujian Provincial Government Scholarships, Xiamen Tan Kah Kee Scholarships, and Xiamen University Scholarships. Full scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, living allowance, healthcare, and insurance costs.

XMU set up its own scholarship program for international students in degree programs back in 2006. It has been growing since. The full details and application portal are available at admissions.xmu.edu.cn.

For those pursuing a CSC (Chinese Government Scholarship), monthly allowances are set by the government: 2,500 RMB for bachelor’s students, 3,000 RMB for master’s students, and 3,500 RMB for doctoral students.

Rankings That Put Xiamen University in Perspective

Numbers don’t tell everything, but they help frame expectations. According to QS World University Rankings, Xiamen University is ranked #341 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 — up from #392 in 2024. The upward trend matters. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it ranks #101 globally in 2025.

That puts it in the same tier as many well-known European and North American institutions. But critically, the cost and competition for entry are very different.

Xiamen University has also earned a Class A designation in China’s Double First-Class University Plan — a government initiative to build world-class universities by 2050. That recognition comes with significant state investment in research and faculty development.

One More Reason to Pay Attention: The Malaysia Campus

This detail often surprises people. Xiamen University Malaysia, established in 2014, represents the first and only overseas branch campus entirely established by a Chinese university under the Double First-Class Initiative. It operates with full autonomy and currently serves over 8,500 students from more than 40 countries.

That kind of institutional confidence — building a genuine overseas campus, not just a partnership — says something about where Xiamen University sees itself heading.

Is Xiamen University the Right Choice?

That depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a campus that combines serious academic output with a location that doesn’t feel like a compromise, Xiamen University is genuinely hard to beat. The research pedigree is real. The international community is growing. The city of Xiamen itself is clean, walkable, and relatively easy for foreigners to navigate.

Perhaps most importantly, studying here puts you inside China’s academic ecosystem at a time when that ecosystem is expanding its global influence fast. Whether you’re drawn by the research opportunities, the scholarships, or just the image of studying next to the sea — Xiamen University has built something worth considering carefully.
