It is not a Project 985 school, whatever several English-language sites claim. HFUT entered Project 211 in 2005 and holds Double First-Class status from both the 2017 and 2022 rounds (Hefei University of Technology, 2026a). That second designation covers Management Science and Engineering — one discipline, not a portfolio. Narrow, yes. But a Double First-Class listing is awarded per discipline, so a single entry means that field is judged nationally competitive rather than merely good.

Now the correction. Several English sites, Wikipedia included, say HFUT joined “Project 985” in 2009. That conflates two different schemes. What HFUT received was a place on the 985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines — a separate and lower-tier programme aimed at strengthening specific fields at non-985 universities. Academic strengths

The national key disciplines are the clearest signal of where HFUT concentrates: Management Science and Engineering as a first-level national key discipline, plus Mechanical Design and Theory, and Power Electronics and Electric Drive at second level (Hefei University of Technology, 2026b). Twelve disciplines now sit in the ESI global top 1%, with engineering in the top 0.04% (Hefei University of Technology, 2026c).

Vehicle engineering deserves a separate mention. The programme traces back to 1954 and is designated a National-level Characteristic Major, with research running across vehicle dynamics, new-energy powertrains, lightweight design and intelligent driving (Hefei University of Technology, 2026d). Roughly 180 undergraduates enter each year. For anyone aiming at the automotive industry, this is the part of HFUT worth choosing it for.

Location and opportunity

Hefei has changed fast. The city is one of the national comprehensive science centres named in the 14th Five-Year Plan, and it hosts major manufacturers including BOE, JAC Motors and NIO, which moved its headquarters there after the city invested in the company in 2020 (Wikipedia, 2026a). That matters for an engineering student in a practical way: the industry you are studying is physically nearby.

One honest caveat. Formal joint-laboratory arrangements between HFUT and those specific companies get repeated widely online, but we could not confirm them on any official university page. The city’s industrial base is real. Treat named corporate partnerships as unverified until the university states them.

Admissions: How to Apply to Hefei University of Technology

Application routes to study at Hefei University of Technology

Two routes exist, and they run on different calendars. Self-funded applicants apply directly to the university. Scholarship applicants normally go through the Chinese Government Scholarship, where HFUT’s institution code is 10359 (Hefei University of Technology, 2025a). Type A applications start with your home country’s dispatching authority, not with the university — a step that catches people out every year.

Undergraduate applicants must be under 25. Master’s applicants must be 35 or under, doctoral applicants 40 or under, and PhD candidates are expected to bring prior publications or patents.

Language requirements

For Chinese-taught programmes, HFUT asks for HSK level 4 with at least 180 points. For English-taught programmes, it accepts IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, TOEFL Essentials 9 or Duolingo 100 (Hefei University of Technology, 2025b). A gap worth flagging: the prospectus defers the list of which majors are actually taught in English to an attachment we could not retrieve. Email the International Office and ask for it by name before you commit.

Documents and deadlines

The undergraduate document set includes passport, high-school credentials and transcripts with a GPA of 75% or better, a CSCA test score (mandatory), a language certificate, a study plan, a medical examination and a non-criminal record certificate — the last two valid for six months — plus a financial guarantee showing a bank deposit of at least ¥30,000. The application fee is ¥400 and is not refunded.

On timing, be realistic. The 2026 undergraduate window closed on 15 June 2026, and the CSC Type B portal closed on 28 February 2026. These figures come from the 2026 prospectus (Hefei University of Technology, 2025b). Fees do drift between cycles, so confirm against the 2027 document when it publishes. A separate Chinese language programme was last advertised at ¥6,000 per semester, but that page dates from 2023 and may well be stale.

Scholarship options

  • CSC Type A (Bilateral Programme) — tuition, accommodation or a housing subsidy, comprehensive medical insurance and a living stipend. Applications run January to early April through your home country’s dispatching authority.
  • CSC Type B (High-Level Postgraduate) — three years for a master’s, four for a doctorate, with interviews held in early March.
  • HFUT Undergraduate Scholarship — Class A covers full tuition plus on-campus housing, Class B half tuition plus housing, Class C housing only.
  • English-Taught Programme Scholarship — Class A covers two-thirds of tuition plus housing, descending through Classes B and C. All are reviewed annually for renewal.

Two cautions. HFUT does not publish CSC stipend cash amounts on its own pages, so check the figure with the CSC directly. And despite what some agency sites suggest, we found no evidence of an Anhui provincial government scholarship open to international students at HFUT — the university’s scholarship index lists Chinese Government Scholarship programmes only. Living in Hefei as an International Student

Housing and campus

HFUT is spread across four sites in Hefei — Tunxi Road, Feicui Lake, Lu’an Road and the Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Institute — plus a separate campus in Xuancheng city, about an hour and a half away (Hefei University of Technology, 2026c). Marketing copy usually mentions two. Confirm which campus your programme actually sits on before you arrange anything, because Xuancheng is a different city entirely.

At ¥4,000 a year, on-campus accommodation is inexpensive by any standard. The university enrols roughly 33,000 undergraduates and 17,000 postgraduates, so campus life has real scale.

Cost of living

Hefei is markedly cheaper than the first-tier cities. Crowdsourced comparisons put Shanghai around 31% more expensive than Hefei excluding rent, and Beijing around 25%, with rent itself several times higher in both (Numbeo, 2026). Those numbers rest on a thin sample for Hefei, so read them as direction rather than precision. The direction, however, is not in doubt — a student budget stretches considerably further here than in Shanghai.

Getting around and city life

The Hefei metro now runs eight lines across 275 km and 195 stations (Wikipedia, 2026b). Winters are cool and summers are hot and humid — January averages about 2.8°C, July about 28.6°C. Hefei is not a tourist city, and English is less widely spoken than in Shanghai or Beijing. Some Chinese will make daily life substantially easier, whichever track you study on.

Visiting the Hefei University of Technology Campus

HFUT has generally operated an open campus, with visitors registering at the gate using identification and entering on foot rather than by car. Access rules at Chinese universities change without much notice, though, and the reporting behind this is from 2024 — so check with the gate or the International Office before travelling. Bring your passport. Note also that the nearby University of Science and Technology of China does not admit general sightseers, so do not assume one policy covers the other.
