CIIE 2026 Transport Guide: Why Line 17 Beats Line 2
CIIE 2026 transport has one twist that catches people out. On opening morning, the metro station named after the venue is shut. The ninth China International Import Expo runs from 5 to 10 November 2026 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai (CIIE, 2026a). On 5 November, Line 2 trains will run straight through that station without stopping until about 13:00 (The Paper, 2026c). So the smarter door, that day and most others, is Line 17.
This guide gathers the official arrangements published in the last two weeks by the expo organisers, Shanghai Metro, the city government and the police. It covers the CIIE 2026 transport basics: lines, exits, shuttles, taxi points and road closures. For what the expo is and who should go, see our overview of CIIE 2026 in Shanghai. This page is just about getting in and out.
CIIE 2026 Transport at a Glance
The city calls its plan “rail as the backbone, chartered buses as the main force, regular buses as the safety net, taxis as support” (Shanghai Municipal Government, 2026). In practice, that boils down to five facts:
- Two metro lines stop at the venue. Line 2 and Line 17 both call at 国家会展中心站 (National Exhibition and Convention Center Station).
- Opening day is different. The Line 2 platform closes on the morning of 5 November. Line 17 stays open.
- Hotel and airport shuttles need booking. They run 5–10 November and are reserved through the 随申行 (Suishenxing) app or mini program.
- Taxis and ride-hailing use numbered lots. Drop-off and pick-up happen at lots such as P0, P1 and P6, not at the hall doors.
- Driving is the hard way. Roads around the venue are controlled, and every nearby parking space needs a reservation.
The venue itself sits at the western edge of the city, about 1.5 km from the Hongqiao transport hub (CIIE, 2024). Distance from downtown is the real problem. Distance from Hongqiao is barely one.
CIIE 2026 Transport by Metro: Line 2 or Line 17
Both lines reach the same station. They do not, however, deliver you to the same entrance. That detail decides how long you queue.
Line 2: the West Entrance Hall
Leave Line 2 by exits 4, 5, 6 or 8 for the West Entrance Hall (西登录厅). Exits 4 and 5 are for badge holders only. Going home, walk back to the West Entrance Hall and enter the station through exits 4, 5 or 9 (The Paper, 2026b). At peak times some exits run one way only, and staff will send you to the right one.
Line 17: the North Entrance Hall
From Line 17, use exit 15. A pedestrian underpass leads straight to the North Plaza and the North Entrance Hall (北登录厅). To leave, head for the north-west corner of the North Plaza and take the same underpass back (The Paper, 2026b).
Shanghai Metro itself steers visitors this way. Security screening at the Line 2 exits can back up at the worst moments, so it suggests switching to Line 17 and walking through (The Paper, 2026c). The easy transfer is at 虹桥火车站 (Hongqiao Railway Station), where Lines 2, 10 and 17 meet. Coming from downtown on Line 10? Change there to Line 17 rather than Line 2 (The Paper, 2026a).
The 5 November Closure
On opening day, the Line 2 side of the NECC station is closed from the start of service until the opening event ends, expected around 13:00. Trains pass through and nobody gets on or off (The Paper, 2026c). Line 17 runs as normal.
For anyone already on Line 2, a bridging bus runs from 05:00 that day. It loops 3.2 km between exit 1 of 蟠祥路·国家会计学院站 (Panxiang Road · National Accounting Institute Station, the next stop west) and the venue, every 5–10 minutes (The Paper, 2026c). Even so, the cleaner move is simply Line 17.
Expect the heaviest crowds at five stations: both NECC platforms, Panxiang Road, Hongqiao Railway Station and 虹桥2号航站楼 (Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2). Shanghai Metro says it will run more trains on Lines 2, 10 and 17 and the Airport Link Line, and open extra ticket counters at departure peaks (The Paper, 2026c).
Paying is easier than it used to be. The whole network now takes contactless bank cards, including UnionPay and Visa, plus digital yuan (Shanghai Municipal Government, 2026). For the wider picture, our guide on how to pay in China covers the apps too.
Airport and Rail Links for CIIE 2026 Transport
Where you land changes everything. Hongqiao is next door. Pudong is on the other side of the city.
- Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2: roughly 2 km away. Take Line 2 west, or a taxi of about 10 minutes (CIIE, 2024).
- Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1: Line 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station, then change. A taxi takes about 20 minutes.
- Hongqiao Railway Station: Line 2 or Line 17, one stop to the venue. High-speed trains from much of eastern China arrive here.
- Pudong International Airport: about 60 km. Line 2 goes all the way, slowly. A taxi takes around 70 minutes without traffic (CIIE, 2024).
From Pudong, there are two better options. The Airport Link Line (市域机场线) runs between Pudong and Hongqiao Terminal 2 in about 40 minutes (Shanghai Municipal Government, 2024). From there, Line 2 or a short taxi ride finishes the trip. Our airport-to-city guide explains how China’s airport rail links work in general.
The second option is the Pudong Airport CIIE custom line (浦东机场定制专线). It runs 5–10 November, and seats are booked in Suishenxing. Pick-up points are the Terminal 1 arrivals level at Gate 6 and the Terminal 2 transport centre bus stop. At the venue it stops at lot P5 on 5 November and at the east side of the North Plaza from 6 to 10 November (The Paper, 2026d). Departure times were published only as an image, so check the app for the timetable.
CIIE 2026 Transport Shuttles and Buses
Many visitors sleep in the Hongqiao area, often in hotels with no metro nearby. That is exactly who the shuttles are for.
Hotel Shuttles
Four routes serve 56 hotels: the 华漕 (Huacao), 诸翟 (Zhuzhai), 徐泾 (Xujing) and 九亭 (Jiuting) lines. They run to the venue between 08:00 and 10:00, and back from lot P5 between 16:30 and 19:30, every 30–60 minutes (The Paper, 2026d). Gaps that long matter. Miss one and you could wait an hour, so book the slot and turn up early.
Bus 71 and the Evening Shuttles
City bus 71 runs a CIIE version from 黄陂北路 (Huangpi North Road) in central Shanghai to lot P5. Inbound buses run 07:00–18:00 and outbound 08:00–19:00, every 5–15 minutes (The Paper, 2026b).
After the halls close, four extra shuttles leave P5 every 10 minutes from 15:00 to 20:00:
- Hongqiao Hub line: to Hongqiao Terminal 2 and Hongqiao Railway Station.
- Jinyun Road line: to Line 13, via Hongqiao Tiandi.
- Qixin Road line: to Line 12, via Line 9 at Zhongchun Road.
- Xujing line: to Vanke Sky City, via several Xujing hotels.
State broadcaster CCTV also reports a hub shuttle between Hongqiao and the venue, running 09:00–17:00 with a ride of about six minutes (Guangming Online, 2026). Six more shuttles link the remote car parks to P5, which connects to the halls by a raised walkway.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing at CIIE 2026
Three taxi firms, Qiangsheng, Dazhong and Jinjiang, have put 3,000 electric cabs on expo duty. Drivers carry change, so cash works, and foreign-card payment is being offered too (Shanghai Municipal Government, 2026). Still, keep a backup way to pay.
Drop-off is quick: P0, P1, P6, P8 and P15. P6 and P8 work as drop-off points only until noon (Shanghai Public Security Bureau, as reported by Jiemian, 2026). Leaving is where it gets fiddly:
- Taxis: queue at P6, on the east side, 13:00–20:00.
- Ride-hailing: P1 from 14:00 and P0 from 15:00, until 19:00 (The Paper, 2026b).
- After 19:00: ride-hailing pick-ups move to spots around the venue (CIIE, 2026b).
Set the pick-up pin to the lot, not the hall. The apps use geofences, and a car sent to the wrong side of a four-leaf clover building can take a long while to reach you. A few words of Mandarin, or a screenshot of the lot number, help when the driver calls.
Road Controls and Parking Around the Venue
Shanghai police have set temporary traffic controls from 1 to 12 November. From 4 to 10 November, 07:00–19:00, the core zone around the venue is closed to motor vehicles except regular buses, taxis and vehicles with passes. On the morning of 5 November, 07:30–10:30, the closure tightens to all motor vehicles (Jiemian, 2026). Trucks face wider bans, and cars entering Shanghai by expressway may be checked from 1 to 10 November.
The organisers say the permit-only zone is smaller than last year (CIIE, 2026b). Parking, though, remains tight. There are 25 temporary car parks, and the ones near the venue need a reservation through Suishenxing or the 上海停车 (Shanghai Parking) app. Booking at least a day ahead is the official advice.
One App for CIIE 2026 Transport, and a Few Perks
Suishenxing is Shanghai’s official mobility platform, and it has a CIIE zone in English and Chinese. It books shuttles and parking, shows live bus positions, and adds an AI assistant called 小交 (Xiaojiao) with walking directions for the last 100 metres (City News Service, 2026). The WeChat mini program version works without a separate download.
A valid expo badge also unlocks some extras. Holders ride 12 city sightseeing bus routes free, get half price on the Huangpu River night cruise, and enter the China Maritime Museum free of charge (Shanghai Municipal Government, 2026). Not bad for an evening off. Our Shanghai city guide has ideas for the rest.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Taking Line 2 on the morning of 5 November and expecting to get off at the venue.
- Booking a downtown hotel and assuming Pudong to the venue is quick. It is not.
- Pinning a ride-hailing pick-up to the hall door instead of P0 or P1.
- Leaving at the exact moment the halls empty. Queues peak then, so a little earlier or later usually helps.
- Driving without a parking reservation.
