WeChat Mini Programs for Foreigners: No +86 Number Needed

WeChat mini programs for foreigners just got a lot less frustrating. For years the same three walls stopped visitors: a login that wanted a +86 number, an ID field that wanted a Chinese ID card, and a page they couldn’t read. On 24 September 2026, WeChat announced that its most-used travel mini programs had fixed all three, starting with DiDi and Amap’s ride-hailing service (WeChat Open Class, 2026). It also launched a visitor section inside the app and a translation feature that now covers every mini program. Here is what changed, and what it means if you’re flying in soon.

What Changed for WeChat Mini Programs for Foreigners

A mini program is an app that runs inside WeChat, with no download. Taxis, restaurants, cinemas and hotels all live there. The announcement bundles three changes:

  • An “Explore China” section. Since early August 2026, WeChat has shown a visitor zone under Discover, then Mini Programs. It recommends popular mini programs near your location.
  • One-tap translation in 26 languages. Every mini program now supports it, and more than 400,000 of them saw real translation use this year.
  • Seven adapted mini programs. DiDi, Amap Ride, Maoyan, Dianping, IHG One Rewards, Heytea and HopeGoo rebuilt login and ID checks for foreign users.

Translation alone was not enough, though. A translated page is useless if the sign-up form still rejects your phone number. So the adapted seven matter most.

DiDi: Passport Sign-Up and a Translated Driver Chat

DiDi is China’s biggest ride-hailing service, and its WeChat mini program now does the following (WeChat Open Class, 2026):

  • Log in with a phone number from outside mainland China.
  • Verify with a passport or a Foreign Permanent Resident ID card.
  • Use it in Simplified Chinese, English, Traditional Chinese or Korean.
  • Chat with the driver through real-time translation.
  • Reach 24/7 customer service in Chinese and English.

Demand is clearly there. DiDi says ride orders from inbound users rose 67% year on year over the 2026 May Day holiday. The translated chat is the quiet win. Pickup confusion at a busy station is where most first rides go wrong, and now the driver’s message arrives in your language.

Amap Ride: 65 Countries and 24 Languages

Amap (高德, Gaode) is best known as China’s leading map app. Its ride service pools cars from many operators, and the mini program has been rebuilt too:

  • Phone numbers from 65 countries and regions can log in.
  • The interface supports 24 languages.
  • In-app messages with the driver are translated in real time.
  • Customer service runs 24 hours in Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Thai.

The Other Five Adapted Mini Programs

The rest of the first batch covers food, tickets and hotels, which is where WeChat mini programs for foreigners used to fail most often:

  • Maoyan (猫眼): film, concert and attraction tickets, bought with an overseas ID. The English pages were redesigned and industry terms custom-translated.
  • Dianping (大众点评): reviews, group deals, table booking and queueing. Non-+86 numbers can log in, and the core checkout pages are in English.
  • IHG One Rewards: a 1,600-term Chinese-English glossary for hotel names, and the forced +86 check removed. Email sign-up works too.
  • Heytea (喜茶): more than 60 changes to wording, fonts and ordering habits for international customers.
  • HopeGoo: hotels, flights and trains, with email or foreign-number login, overseas IDs and foreign-name formats.

It takes three taps. Open WeChat, tap Discover, then Mini Programs, and look for Explore China near the top. From there you can open DiDi, Amap Ride and the rest directly.

Why This Matters Beyond Convenience

The numbers explain the push behind WeChat mini programs for foreigners. In the second half of 2025, inbound users opened mini programs over 20% more often than a year before, and spent over 50% more through them. By the second quarter of 2026, usage growth had climbed to 34% (WeChat Open Class, 2026). In other words, visitors already rely on mini programs. The fixes simply catch up with them.

It also changes trip planning. Previously, many guides told visitors to skip WeChat mini programs and use standalone apps. That advice now looks dated for rides and tickets at least. Meanwhile, payment is getting a parallel fix. The same day, WeChat Pay released TenPayGo, a separate wallet app that registers with only an email address.

What Comes Next, and What Still Doesn’t Work

Seven adapted WeChat mini programs for foreigners is a start, not a finish, and WeChat says so itself. Most services visitors need come from small businesses in dining, retail, healthcare and local government. So WeChat launched an “Inbound-Friendly Service Plan” (入境友好服务计划, our translation) to recruit more of them. It also released an open-source adaptation tool for developers. The tool scans a mini program and flags three problem areas: phone-number login, ID and name fields, and layouts that break once translated.

For now, a few cautions:

  • Most mini programs still expect a +86 number. Translation helps you read them, not necessarily sign up.
  • One-tap translation is machine translation. Double-check prices, dates and addresses.
  • WeChat itself still needs a phone number to register, though foreign numbers work.
