Study at Liaoning University: Economics, Late Deadlines, Low Fees
To study at Liaoning University is to join a school that began as a business college. It traces back to November 1948, when the Northeast People’s Government opened a commercial school in Shenyang, and it took its present name after a 1958 merger (Liaoning University, n.d.). Today it is a Project 211 university, and its one Double First-Class discipline is applied economics.
That economics core is the first reason to look here. The second is practical. Fees sit well below Beijing’s, and the 2026 undergraduate window stays open until the end of July. This guide covers both, plus the language bar, scholarships and life in Shenyang.

Why Study at Liaoning University: An Economics School First
211 and Double First-Class status, stated plainly
LNU is a 211 university, not a 985. It sits in the national Double First-Class programme with one listed discipline, applied economics. At provincial level, seven disciplines are on Liaoning’s own Double First-Class list, including law, business administration, statistics and environmental science (Liaoning University, n.d.).
So what do those labels actually mean for you? Our overviews of the top universities in China and China’s 985 and 211 universities explain the tiers.
Academic strengths: economics, then the rest
The university calls itself comprehensive, and it does teach humanities, law, science, engineering, medicine and art. Still, the brand is economics. The founding school was a commerce college, and theoretical and applied economics, statistics and business administration remain its deepest benches. If you want finance or trade with a Northeast China focus, this is the natural fit.
International teaching is not new here either. LNU has taken foreign students since 1965, which makes it one of the earlier Chinese universities to do so, and it runs an HSK test centre on site (Wikipedia, 2026).
Location: three campuses, two cities
Here is the detail to check before you accept an offer. LNU runs three campuses: Chongshan and Puhe in Shenyang, and Wusheng in Liaoyang (Liaoning University, n.d.). Chongshan is the older, central campus in Huanggu District. Puhe sits out in the Shenbei area, much farther from the city centre. Ask admissions which campus your programme uses.
Admissions: How to Apply to Study at Liaoning University
Programmes and language requirements
LNU offers four-year bachelor’s degrees, two- to three-year master’s degrees, doctorates and long- or short-term Chinese language study. Both Chinese-taught and English-taught options exist. For Chinese-taught degrees, the 2026 guide asks for HSK 4 with a score of at least 180. For English-taught degrees, it asks for IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 60 (Liaoning University, 2025).
One warning, though. An older admissions page for LNU on a third-party portal still lists HSK 6 for degree applicants (Liaoning University, n.d.-b). The 2026 guide from the International Education College is the newer document, so follow it, and confirm by email if your programme is competitive. Our guide to the HSK level universities require explains the bands.
The CSCA, documents and deadlines
Bachelor’s applicants must also sit the CSCA, the new admission test for international undergraduates (Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mongolia, 2025). LNU’s guide names sittings in December 2025 and in January, March, April and June 2026. Our explainer on the CSCA exam covers the subjects.
- Bachelor’s: open now until 31 July 2026.
- Master’s and doctorates: open now until 30 June 2026.
- Long-term Chinese study: by 8 February for spring; 1 April to 15 August for autumn.
- Minimum age: 16, with notarised guardianship papers for anyone under 18.
- Documents: passport, highest diploma and transcripts with translations, physical examination form, a criminal record certificate, a language certificate and a CV. Graduate applicants add a study plan and recommendation letters (Liaoning University, 2025).
Why the late deadline matters
Many 211 schools close degree applications in June. Beijing Forestry University, for example, stops at 15 June. A July cut-off gives you an extra six weeks to finish a CSCA sitting or collect a criminal record certificate.
That said, a late application leaves little time for the X1 visa before September. Treat July as a safety net, not a plan. If you want a scholarship, the dates below come much earlier anyway.
Scholarships and Tuition at Liaoning University
Tuition and fees for 2026
- Application fee: 800 CNY per programme.
- Bachelor’s: 18,000 CNY a year.
- Master’s: 25,000 CNY a year.
- Doctorate: 30,000 CNY a year.
- Chinese language study: 13,000 CNY a year, or 2,500 CNY a month.
- Insurance: 800 CNY a year, compulsory.
- Campus rooms: 64 CNY a day for a single, 32 CNY a day per person in a double (Liaoning University, 2025).
Compare that bachelor’s figure with Beijing. Beijing Forestry lists about 24,800 CNY, so LNU saves you close to 7,000 CNY a year before rent even enters the picture.
The Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship
In 2026, LNU used its provincial award for doctoral students. It covers tuition, accommodation and comprehensive insurance, and it pays 3,500 CNY a month for up to three years. Applicants must be under 40 and hold HSK 4, or IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 for English-taught study. The 2026 window ran from 5 to 15 June, with results before 10 July (Liaoning University, 2026).
Chinese Government Scholarship routes
LNU also takes Chinese Government Scholarship students. For 2026 it published guides for the High-Level Postgraduate Program and the “Silk Road” programme. Both follow the national calendar, which usually closes in spring. Our China scholarships 2027 calendar tracks those windows, and scholarships in China compares the schemes.
Living in Shenyang While You Study at Liaoning University
Housing and cost of living
A shared campus room at 32 CNY a day comes to under 1,000 CNY a month. Off campus, Shenyang rents run far below Beijing or Shanghai. Canteen food is cheap, and Northeast portions are famously large. Overall, this is one of the more affordable big cities for a 211 degree.
Winter, transport and city life
Be ready for the cold, honestly. January averages about −11 °C (Wikipedia, 2026b), although buildings are well heated. The metro now runs six lines and reaches Taoxian Airport. Set up mobile payment in your first week with our guide to how to pay in China, and then read our Shenyang travel guide for weekends at the Qing palace and tombs.
Shenyang is also a real university city. Northeastern University, the city’s 985 school, is a useful comparison if engineering tempts you more than economics.
Visiting the Campus Before You Apply
Chongshan campus is the easier visit, since it sits inside the city. Among LNU’s buildings, look out for the Huaiyuan Building, a columned neoclassical block with a red star on its pediment. Chinese campuses usually check ID at the gate, so carry your passport and email admissions first.
