Universities in China: A Guide by Region for International Students

Map of the seven geographical regions of China showing East China, Central China, North China, South China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Northeast China with regional boundaries and abbreviations. Map illustrating China's seven geographical regions including EC (East China), MC (Middle China), NC (North China), and four other traditional divisions with clear regional labels.

Universities in China span every corner of the country — from the political heart of Beijing to the subtropical coastline of Hainan. There are over 3,000 higher education institutions nationwide. This guide follows China’s seven standard geographic regions, introduces the cities that shape student life, and names the universities worth knowing.

Understanding China’s University Tiers: 985, 211, and Double First-Class

Before exploring regions, it helps to understand how top universities in China are classified. Three terms come up constantly.

Project 985 launched in May 1998 to build world-class research institutions, selecting 39 universities — including the C9 League, China’s equivalent of the Ivy League (Wikipedia, 2024). Project 211, started in 1995, cast a wider net: roughly 116 universities received government funding to raise research standards (Wikipedia, 2024). For a full breakdown, see China’s 985 and 211 Universities: The Complete Guide.

Both programs were replaced in 2016 by the Double First-Class Construction, whose Phase 2 list covers 147 universities (Ministry of Education, PRC, 2022). Since 2016, China has invested 167 billion yuan into these institutions (Times Higher Education, 2024).

  • Jilin University (985) — one of China’s largest universities, covering automotive engineering, geology, and medicine across campuses that span the entire city of Changchun.

华东 · East China

Shanghai · Jiangsu · Zhejiang · Anhui · Fujian · Jiangxi · Shandong

The most competitive academic region in China — research prestige and career access side by side.

Shanghai:

  • Fudan University (C9, 985) — one of China’s most prestigious comprehensive universities, strong in humanities, medicine, and life sciences, next to Lujiazui’s financial district.
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) (C9, 985) — consistently ranked Asia’s top five, leading in marine engineering, biomedical research, and AI.
  • Tongji University (985) — Shanghai’s architecture and urban planning powerhouse, with research embedded across the city’s infrastructure.
  • East China Normal University (ECNU) (985) — strong in education, geography, and psychology; a growing choice for humanities-focused international students in Shanghai.

Jiangsu:

  • Nanjing University (C9, 985) — one of China’s most respected universities, with particular strength in physics, chemistry, and earth sciences.
  • Southeast University (985) — strong in engineering and architecture; its students made global headlines in 2026 by flying an eVTOL car across a campus lake.
  • Soochow University, Suzhou (Double First-Class) — historic university in China’s silk capital, offering a one-of-a-kind program in the history and science of silk.

Zhejiang:

  • Zhejiang University, Hangzhou (C9, 985) — a comprehensive C9 institution located inside Alibaba’s backyard, covering every major discipline with deep industry ties.

Anhui:

Shandong:

  • Shandong University, Jinan (985) — founded in 1901, strong in humanities, Chinese studies, and materials science.
  • Ocean University of China, Qingdao (985) — sends graduate students to Antarctica on icebreakers; China’s leading institution for marine science and fisheries.

Fujian:

  • Xiamen University (985) — a coastal campus with stunning scenery, strong in economics, chemistry, and marine science.

Jiangxi: Nanchang University (Double First-Class) serves as the provincial flagship, with strengths in food science and materials engineering.

华中 · Central China

Henan · Hubei · Hunan

Wuhan reportedly hosts more university students than any other city in the world. Changsha adds strong options nearby — all at notably lower costs than the coast.

Hubei:

  • Wuhan University (985) — one of China’s most beautiful campuses, set on Luojia Mountain beside East Lake, with world-class programs in remote sensing, law, and humanities.
  • Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) (985) — leading in optics, laser technology, engineering, and medicine; its campus blooms spectacularly with cherry blossoms every March.

Hunan:

  • Central South University (985) — strong in metallurgy, railway engineering, and medicine; closely tied to China’s high-speed rail industry.
  • Hunan University (985) — traces its roots to the Yuelu Academy founded over 1,000 years ago; the original classroom still stands and is still in use today.
  • National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) (985) — built China’s fastest supercomputer twice and contributed to the BeiDou navigation system; access for foreign students is strictly limited.

Henan: Zhengzhou University (Double First-Class) is the provincial flagship, the largest university in China by enrollment, with growing strengths in materials science and medicine.

华南 · South China

Guangdong · Guangxi · Hainan

Subtropical climate, business energy, and a fast-rising tech corridor between Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Guangdong:

  • Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou (985) — founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924, now leading in tropical medicine, marine science, and humanities.
  • South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou (985) — strong in engineering and design; a significant share of China’s electric vehicle engineers and founders studied here.
  • Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen (Double First-Class) — a young institution founded in 2011, rapidly building a research reputation inside China’s tech capital.

Also in this region: Guangxi University (Nanning — Double First-Class), Hainan University (Haikou — Double First-Class).
