To study at Wenzhou Medical University is to enrol in one of the first English-taught medical degrees China ever approved — and then to discover that almost nothing written about it in English comes from the university itself. The recruiter pages quote fees that differ by thousands of yuan. The official English site does not publish a fee table at all. Meanwhile the Chinese-language admissions notice lists every number to the yuan.

So this guide works from that Chinese notice, not from the agents. It covers what the six-year MBBS actually costs, the entrance test and health rules that quietly exclude people, and the harder question underneath all of it: whether the degree will let you practise once you go home.

Why Study at Wenzhou Medical University

Provincial key status, and what it is not

WMU is a Zhejiang provincial public university. In 2015 it became jointly built by the Zhejiang provincial government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education. It became a Zhejiang key construction university in 2017, and a provincial high-level university project in 2023 (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026).

One clarification, because agents blur it. WMU is not a 985 school and it is not on the national Double First-Class list. Its status is provincial, and that is a real distinction — see the guide to China’s 985 and 211 universities if the tiers are new to you.

Where the research strength actually is

Fifteen of its disciplines sit in the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators, and clinical medicine plus pharmacology and toxicology reach the top 0.1% (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026). That is a serious research base for a provincial institution.

Ophthalmology and optometry are the standout, though. The Eye Hospital of WMU is one of the best-known eye hospitals in the country, and the university’s optometry programme is the reason it appears in international literature at all. If you are drawn to eyes, this is a genuinely strong address.

A long track record with foreign students

WMU has taken foreign students since 1996 and set up its School of International Studies in April 2006. In 2007 the Ministry of Education approved it as one of the very first Chinese institutions permitted to run a bachelor’s clinical medicine programme taught in English (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026). Today it hosts more than 500 full-time international students from over 60 countries.

The entrance test most guides omit

WMU now requires a China Scholastic Competency Assessment score from undergraduate applicants, in two specific papers: mathematics in English and chemistry in English (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026). Five sittings run each year, in January, March, April, June and December, through csca.cn.

Language and academic requirements

Applicants are normally 18 to 30 years old, hold a high school qualification, and must show grades in physics, chemistry and biology. Applicants from countries where English is not the native language need IELTS 6.0 with no band under 5.0, TOEFL 70 with no section under 15, Duolingo 105, or proof that their whole secondary education was taught in English (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026).

No HSK level is demanded at entry for the English track. You will still need functional Mandarin on the wards, which is a point worth sitting with rather than skipping past.

The health rules that exclude people

These are unusually specific, and they are checked at the entry medical. Applicants must not have high myopia or colour blindness or colour weakness, and hearing, sense of smell and speech must be normal. Dentistry, oddly enough, does not admit left-handed applicants (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026).

Read that list before you pay anything. Failing the entry examination cancels admission, and the registration fee is not refundable.

Dates and how the file moves

Applications run from January to July for a September start, through the university’s own online system. Pre-admission decisions come back within about ten working days. The admission letter and the JW202 visa form arrive in July or August — and the JW202, not the offer email, is what counts as admitted (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026).

The real fee table

  • Clinical medicine (MBBS), English-taught, six years — 33,000 RMB a year
  • Dentistry (BDS), five years — 33,000 RMB a year
  • Pharmacy, nursing and biotechnology, four years — 20,000 RMB a year
  • Registration fee — 600 RMB, first year only
  • Twin-room accommodation — 4,400 RMB a year
  • Insurance — 800 RMB a year, textbooks at cost

All figures come from the university’s own 2026 admissions notice (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026). So an MBBS year lands near 38,800 RMB before food and travel — close to some agent quotes, well under others.

Scholarships, and the catch in the timing

Medicine and dentistry entrants compete for freshman awards of 20,000 RMB for the top quarter, 10,000 RMB for the next quarter, and 5,000 RMB for the rest. From year two, academic awards run at 5,000, 2,000 or 1,000 RMB, with a provincial award of 20,000 RMB alongside them.

Here is the catch. You must pay the full tuition and complete registration first; the freshman award is only decided afterwards, by entrance-exam ranking (Wenzhou Medical University, 2026). Plan the cash flow for that. WMU also participates in the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Zhejiang Government Scholarship — the CSC scholarship application runs on its own separate calendar.

Will the Degree Let You Practise at Home?

This is the question that should decide whether you apply anywhere, and it has no single answer. Licensing is set by your home regulator, not by the university.

Start with the directories

Check the school yourself in the World Directory of Medical Schools at search.wdoms.org. Many regulators use that listing as their reference point, and checking takes a minute. Do not accept a screenshot from an agent.

United States — accreditation, not just listing

ECFMG announced that applicants for certification should come from a school accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education, originally as a 2024 requirement (ECFMG, 2020). The policy was later rolled out as a recommendation rather than a hard bar, so the position has moved more than once. Verify the current wording with ECFMG directly before you commit six years.

India — the structural rules matter more than the ranking

India’s National Medical Commission sets conditions on the shape of the degree itself under its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations: a course of at least 54 months, a 12-month internship at the same foreign school, instruction in English, and then the screening examination at home. A six-year MBBS with the internship inside it is the structure those rules expect. Even so, confirm the current text with the NMC, since the regulations have been amended and clarified repeatedly.

Staying in China instead

Living in Wenzhou as an International Student

Wenzhou sits on the Zhejiang coast, roughly halfway between Shanghai and Fuzhou, and it is a merchant city before it is a student city. That cuts both ways. Costs run well below Shanghai or Beijing, and the food is excellent. English, however, is thinner on the ground than in a first-tier city.

The main campus is in the Chashan university town, south of the centre. Twin rooms at 4,400 RMB a year are cheap by any standard, though you should ask what that room actually includes before you arrive. High-speed rail links the city north along the coast, which makes weekends elsewhere in Hangzhou and Zhejiang straightforward.
