Study at Ningbo University: MBBS, Mechanics and Real 2026 Costs
To study at Ningbo University is to join a young port-city school with an odd-looking badge: it made the national Double First-Class list for mechanics, yet many international applicants arrive for its English-taught MBBS. That mismatch raises a fair doubt. Is the medical degree a real, approved programme, or a side business? Founded in 1986 with a gift from shipping magnate Sir Yue-Kong Pao, Ningbo University (宁波大学) is now a Double First-Class university with six directly affiliated hospitals (Ningbo University, 2026).
So this guide checks the claims against the government lists. Then it sets out the 2026 fees from the university’s own admissions guide, the new entrance test, and what daily life in Ningbo really looks like.

Why Study at Ningbo University
Double First-Class status, and what it covers
In February 2022 the Ministry of Education published the second-round Double First-Class list. Ningbo University appears on it, with mechanics as its named discipline (Ministry of Education et al., 2022). It is not a 985 or a 211 school, though. The label came from discipline strength alone, which is exactly how newer entrants qualify. Our guide to China’s 985 and 211 universities explains how the tiers fit together.
Here is the catch. The badge is about mechanics, not medicine. So it tells you the institution is nationally funded and reviewed — but it says nothing direct about the MBBS. That needs a separate check, and the next section does it.
Is the English-taught MBBS approved?
Yes, as far as the most recent public list shows. The Ministry of Education only lets named universities enrol international students in English-taught clinical medicine. Schools off that list may not issue an MBBS degree certificate in English at all. For 2023–2024 the list named 44 universities, and Ningbo University was one, with 40 places (General Office of the Ministry of Education, 2023).
That list is renewed every year, however, and later editions are harder to find online. So ask the International College to confirm the current year’s quota before you pay anything. A legitimate school will answer that question without fuss.
A comprehensive campus, not a medical college
Unlike a stand-alone medical university, Ningbo University covers 12 broad fields, from economics to marine science. It has 26 schools, about 22,000 undergraduates and 1,169 international students (Ningbo University, 2026). Fifteen of its disciplines, including clinical medicine, sit in the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators.
In practice that means medical students share a campus with engineers, linguists and business students. Some people love that mix; others would rather be somewhere that thinks only about medicine. Both are reasonable. If you want the second kind, compare with Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, which runs a larger medical school inside a 985 university.
Programmes You Can Study at Ningbo University in English
The 2026 undergraduate guide lists a short menu. Most programmes run four years and cost 20,000 yuan a year (Ningbo University International College, 2026a):
- MBBS (Health Science Center): 6 years, English, 38,000 yuan a year
- Architecture: 5 years, English, 22,000 yuan
- Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation: 4 years, English, 22,000 yuan
- Musical Education: 4 years, English, 24,000 yuan
- Business Administration, International Economy and Trade, Financial Engineering, Primary Education, English, and Logistics Management (International Shipping): 4 years, 20,000 yuan
- Law (taught in Chinese) and Japanese (Japanese and Chinese): 4 years, 20,000 yuan
Note one detail. Shipping, marine science and food science students study on the Meishan campus in Beilun district, not the main campus. Check which campus your programme uses before you book housing.
Admissions: How to Apply to Ningbo University
The CSCA test is now compulsory
From 2026, every international undergraduate applicant must submit a China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) score. MBBS applicants sit mathematics and chemistry; most other programmes need mathematics, and architecture or engineering add physics (Ningbo University International College, 2026a). Sittings run five times a year, in January, March, April, June and December, via csca.cn.
Many agent pages still skip this step. Our explainer on the CSCA exam covers the format, so plan a sitting well ahead of your application.
Age, language and nationality rules
Undergraduate applicants must hold a foreign passport, be under 25 and have finished high school. English-taught programmes need no Chinese. Still, non-native English speakers must send a TOEFL, IELTS or similar score — the guide names no minimum, so ask. Applicants with Chinese-born parents also face residence-abroad rules under the Ministry’s 2020 regulations.
Documents and the application process
- Create an account in the online system and pay the 500-yuan application fee.
- Upload your passport (valid past 1 March 2027), photo, diploma, transcript, CSCA score, no-criminal-record certificate and foreigner medical form.
- Pass the International College check, then the faculty review; some programmes add an interview.
- Pay the first-year tuition after a pre-admission notice, then download the admission letter and visa form.
The 2026 guide does not print a closing date. Therefore treat spring as the working window and confirm by email at admissions@nbu.edu.cn.
Scholarships and Tuition at Ningbo University
What the first MBBS year costs
Using the 2026 fee table, a first MBBS year adds up roughly like this (Ningbo University International College, 2026a):
- Tuition: 38,000 yuan
- Insurance: 1,200 yuan a year; residence permit: 800 yuan a year
- Medical check in Ningbo: 500 yuan; application fee: 500 yuan
- Housing: 4,000 yuan a year (Yongjiang double room) up to 1,200 yuan a month (single room)
- Food: about 1,500 yuan a month, by the university’s own estimate
In other words, a careful student might spend around 60,000 yuan in year one, textbooks aside. That is an estimate, not a quote, and exchange rates move.
Scholarship options
For 2026–2027 the university lists three one-year awards for undergraduates: Zhejiang Government, Ningbo Government and Ningbo University scholarships, each worth 20,000 yuan (Ningbo University International College, 2026b). You cannot hold two at once. The full Chinese Government Scholarship university track is for master’s and PhD students only; undergraduates go through the bilateral route at a Chinese embassy instead. See scholarships in China for the wider picture.
Living in Ningbo as an International Student
Housing and food on campus
Rooms are limited, so apply early. The canteens serve mostly Chinese food, and there is a Muslim restaurant on the second floor of the Second Canteen (Ningbo University International College, 2023). A pedestrian street beside campus holds dozens more places to eat. Ningbo itself is known for seafood and rice cakes.
Getting around the city
Metro Line 2 stops at the main gate. Downtown is about 20 minutes away, and the same line reaches the railway station and the airport. Payments run on Alipay and WeChat, as everywhere in China. For weekends, our Ningbo city guide covers the Old Bund and Tianyi Pavilion, and the Zhejiang travel guide reaches Hangzhou and beyond.
Will an MBBS From Ningbo University Let You Practise?
This is the question that matters most, and the university cannot answer it for you. Your home medical regulator decides. Many regulators look for the school in the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Federation for Medical Education, n.d.). Graduates aiming at the United States also need a school whose accreditor is recognised under the ECFMG rule (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, 2020).
Meanwhile, remember that Chinese hospitals run in Mandarin. Clinical years at the affiliated hospitals will go far better with solid Chinese, so start early.
