Study at Shanxi University: The 1902 School Outside 211
To study at Shanxi University is to enrol at one of the three oldest modern universities in China. It opened in 1902 as the Shanxi Imperial University, in the same short burst that produced the forerunners of Peking University and Tianjin University (Shanxi University, n.d.). Yet most agents will tell you it is “only provincial.” It never made the 211 or 985 lists. So here is the doubt this guide tackles head-on: does a 1902 school without a 211 badge still count? Short answer — since 2022 it is a Double First-Class university, for philosophy and physics. Below are the fees, the language bar, the scholarships and what life in Taiyuan looks like.

Why Study at Shanxi University: Old Roots, New Status
A 1902 founding with a Western wing
The school grew out of three older Shanxi academies, the Sanli, Jinyang and Lingde, going back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Then, in 1902, it added a College of Western Studies. Oddly enough, that college ran on money the British returned from the Boxer indemnity, and the Welsh missionary Timothy Richard headed it. The university also set up a translation bureau to put Western textbooks into Chinese — by its own count, the second such bureau at any modern Chinese university (Shanxi University, n.d.).
The 1950s then took the school apart. Its finance, law, metallurgy, textile and mining departments went to universities in Beijing and Xi’an. Its engineering, agriculture and medical colleges were spun off as independent schools. That explains a common confusion: Taiyuan University of Technology, the city’s 211 engineering school, also dates itself to 1902. Same root, two trees.
Double First-Class status, without 211
Shanxi University is not a 211 or 985 school. It was not on the first Double First-Class list in 2017 either. It joined in the second round, which the Ministry of Education published in February 2022, with philosophy and physics as its two listed disciplines (Ministry of Education et al., 2022). In Shanxi, only it and Taiyuan University of Technology made that list. So if a sponsor reads the current list, this is a national-tier school. If a sponsor still reads only the old 211 list, check with them first. Our overview of top universities in China explains how the two systems overlap.
Where the strength sits: quantum optics and philosophy of science
Physics here means light and atoms, mostly. The Institute of Opto-Electronics, founded in 1984, was one of the first quantum-optics groups in China. In 2002 it became the core of a state key laboratory for quantum optics and quantum optical devices. Its work on ultracold Fermi gases won a national natural science prize in 2020 (Institute of Opto-Electronics, n.d.). Philosophy, meanwhile, is anchored by philosophy of science and technology, a national key discipline. Honestly, that pairing is unusual — and it suits a student who wants depth over brand.
Admissions: How to Apply to Shanxi University
Bachelor’s degrees and the 1+4 route
The 2026 undergraduate guide offers six Chinese-taught majors (Shanxi University SIEE, 2025a):
- International Economics and Trade
- Business Administration
- Tourism Management
- Chinese Language and Literature
- International Politics
- Computer Science and Technology
Direct entry asks for HSK 4 at 180 or more, a high-school average of 85 or above, an age under 25, and an interview. It also asks for a score from the new CSCA undergraduate test — see our CSCA exam explainer. No HSK yet? Then the 1+4 programme adds one preparatory year of Chinese, at 5,000 CNY, before the same six majors (Shanxi University SIEE, 2025b).
Master’s and PhD: find a supervisor first
Postgraduate entry works differently. To study at Shanxi University as a master’s or PhD student, you need an acceptance letter from a Shanxi University supervisor, so contact one before you apply. Master’s applicants need HSK 5 at 200 or more for Chinese-taught study. PhD applicants need HSK 6 at 180 or more. For English-taught study, IELTS 6, TOEFL iBT 70 or Duolingo 110 is accepted. The university names chemistry, computer science, physics, biology, law, Chinese medicine and education as its popular fields (Shanxi University SIEE, 2026b). Not sure which HSK level fits? Our guide to the HSK level for university walks through it.
Documents and deadlines
- Passport valid for at least one year from the start date.
- Highest diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and transcripts.
- Bank proof of at least 20,000 CNY, dated within six months.
- Police clearance and a health certificate, both within six months.
- For postgraduates: two recommendation letters and a personal statement.
For the 2026 intake, bachelor’s applications ran from 1 December 2025 to 30 June 2026. The self-funded postgraduate window ran from 1 January to 30 June 2026. All of those dates have now passed. The 2027 guides are not out yet, so treat the 2026 dates as a pattern and check again from November.
Tuition and Scholarships at Shanxi University
What a year costs
Published 2026 fees, in CNY (Shanxi University SIEE, 2026b):
- Tuition — 20,000 a year for a bachelor’s, 22,000 for a master’s, 24,000 for a PhD.
- Housing — 300 a month in a triple room; PhD students get a double at 500.
- Other — insurance 800 a year, residence permit 800 a year, a 500 application fee and 500 for a repeat medical check if needed.
Put together, a self-funded undergraduate pays roughly 25,000–26,000 CNY in the first year, before food and books. That is modest for a Double First-Class school, though not the cheapest.
Scholarship options
- Chinese Government Scholarship, Type B — master’s and PhD only, agency number 10108, 20 places in 2026. It covered tuition, housing and insurance, plus 36,000 CNY a year for master’s and 42,000 for PhD students. The 2026 window ran 1 January to 25 March (Shanxi University SIEE, 2026a).
- Shanxi Government Scholarship — tuition and housing, plus 20,000 CNY (master’s) or 25,000 (PhD) over ten months (Shanxi University SIEE, 2026b).
- University scholarship — a full award with 15,000 or 20,000 CNY over ten months, or a partial award waiving tuition and housing.
- Undergraduate awards — Class A waives tuition and housing and adds 7,500 CNY a year, for HSK 4 at 220 and an entrance score of 85. Class B waives tuition and housing (Shanxi University SIEE, 2025a).

Living in Taiyuan as an International Student
A small international crowd
The university reports around 200 international students a year, long and short term combined (Shanxi University, n.d.). That is tiny. In practice it means fewer English menus and far more Mandarin. For a language learner, that is the point. The international school sits on the Wucheng campus in the south of the city; the university also runs Dongshan, Dadongguan and Datong campuses.
Cost of living
Taiyuan is cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai by a wide margin. Campus housing at 300 CNY a month is hard to beat, and canteen meals stay cheap. The city runs on noodles and aged vinegar, which helps the budget too. Winters are cold and dry, though, so budget for warm clothes. Our Taiyuan city guide covers the metro, the stations and the food.
Weekends in Shanxi
Then there is the province itself, which is arguably the best reason to pick Taiyuan. Jinci Temple, with its Song-dynasty halls, sits about 25 kilometres south-west of the city. Pingyao is under an hour by high-speed train, and Beijing about three. The Shanxi province guide lists the Yungang Grottoes, Mount Wutai and the rest. Payments are cashless, so set up mobile pay in week one.
Visiting the Shanxi University Campus
In the university’s north section stands a replica of the original Shanxi Imperial University gate, a grey stone arch with columns. If you plan to study at Shanxi University, it is the one spot that tells the 1902 story at a glance. Campus access rules change, so bring your passport and expect a gate check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shanxi University a 211 university?
No. It is neither 211 nor 985. It has been a Double First-Class university since 2022, for philosophy and physics.
Is it the same as Taiyuan University of Technology?
No. They share a 1902 root, but they have been separate schools since the 1950s. Taiyuan University of Technology is the 211 engineering school.
What HSK level do I need?
HSK 4 (180+) for a bachelor’s, HSK 5 (200+) for a Chinese-taught master’s, HSK 6 (180+) for a PhD. The 1+4 route needs no HSK at entry.
How much does it cost to study at Shanxi University?
Tuition runs 20,000–24,000 CNY a year by degree level, per the 2026 guides. Housing and fees add about 5,000–6,000 CNY in year one.
Are any degrees taught in English?
Bachelor’s degrees are Chinese-taught. Some postgraduate programmes accept English scores, so ask the supervisor you contact.
Conclusion: Is It Worth It to Study at Shanxi University?
For a physicist drawn to quantum optics, or a philosophy student interested in science, the case is strong. For a learner who wants real immersion and low costs, it is good, too. The catches are the missing 211 badge, a short list of undergraduate majors, and a Chinese-first campus. Check those against your plans. Then, once the offer arrives, our China student visa guide covers the next step.
