Zhengzhou: More Than Henan’s Place to Change Trains

Zhengzhou is the Chinese city most travellers see only from a train platform. It sits where the country’s big rail lines cross, so anyone heading for Shaolin, Luoyang or Xi’an changes trains here and moves on. That habit skips a 3,600-year-old capital with its city wall still standing in the middle of town.

So this guide makes a simple case. Treat the city as a base, not a transfer. Stay two nights, see the museum and the Shang wall, then use the same rail hub to reach half of Henan on day trips.

Zhengzhou at a Glance

Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan province. It lies on the south bank of the Yellow River, and the 2020 census counted about 12.6 million people in the municipality (Wikipedia, 2026a). In other words, this is a megacity, even if few people abroad could place it on a map.

Two facts explain the place. First, the city grew up at the junction of the Beijing–Guangzhou and Longhai railways, and it still works as a crossroads. Second, it is one of the oldest cities in China. Around 1600 BCE it was a walled Shang capital, probably the one the old texts call Ao or Bo (Wikipedia, 2026a).

The modern economy is less romantic. Foxconn’s plant near the airport is a huge smartphone production site, which earned the city the nickname “iPhone City”. Expect wide roads, new towers and a metro that keeps growing, now 13 lines and roughly 450 kilometres of track.

Why Zhengzhou Is Worth More Than a Transfer

Here is the part most guides skip. Archaeologists began digging in 1952 and found a rammed-earth city wall in 1955. The enclosure runs about seven kilometres around, and it is older than the famous Shang site at Anyang (Wikipedia, 2026b). Long stretches still rise as grassy ridges between apartment blocks and bus stops.

You can simply walk along it, for free, in the Guancheng district. After that, the Shang Capital Relics Museum explains what you just saw. It is open 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays except public holidays, and the last entry is 16:00 (Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government, n.d.). Reservations go through the museum’s WeChat account.

The Henan Museum

The Henan Museum is the main reason to stop. It holds about 140,000 objects, and more than 5,000 of them are graded national first- or second-class relics (Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government, 2024). Because Henan was the political centre of China for so long, the collection reads like a national history, not a regional one.

Entry is free, but you must book. The museum releases timed slots, 9:00–11:00, 11:00–14:00 and 14:00–16:00, through its WeChat account (Henan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, 2023). Foreign visitors can reserve with a passport and bring the same passport on the day. Give it at least three hours.

The best base in Henan

Then there is geography. From this one city, Luoyang is about 40 minutes by high-speed train, Kaifeng about 25 and Anyang about 36. Beijing takes roughly two and a half hours, and Xi’an about two. Few cities in China let you sleep in one hotel and reach four ancient capitals.

Best Time to Visit Zhengzhou

  • September to early November: the easy pick. Dry, mild, and good for the walk along the Shang wall.
  • April and May: pleasant too, and April lines up with the Luoyang peony season next door.
  • Summer: hot and humid. Museums become the plan, which is not a bad thing here.
  • Winter: cold, dry and sometimes hazy. Still, crowds thin out and hotels get cheap.

How to Get to Zhengzhou

By air, and the 240-hour transit rule

Xinzheng International Airport is the international gateway for the province. It is also one of the ports where the 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies (China Daily, 2025). Under the national rules, nationals of 57 countries can stay up to ten days if they hold an onward ticket to a third country or region (National Immigration Administration, 2026).

By high-speed rail: know your station

Most visitors arrive by train, and the station matters. Zhengzhou East, opened in 2012, handles the high-speed lines and has 30 platforms. The older Zhengzhou station sits about 12 kilometres west, near Erqi Square (Wikipedia, 2026c). Metro Lines 1 and 2 link East station to the centre.

What to See in Zhengzhou, and Beyond

In the city

  • Henan Museum, 8 Nongye Road: book ahead, take Metro Line 2 to Guanhutun, exit C, then walk about ten minutes west.
  • The Shang city wall and the Shang Capital Relics Museum in Guancheng: the pair make a good half day.
  • Erqi Memorial Tower: the twin-pagoda tower over Erqi Square, built for the 1923 railway workers’ strike. It is at its best lit up at night.
  • Zhengdong New Area: the new district around Longzihu lake, for a skyline walk at sunset.
  • The Yellow River Scenic Area, north of the centre: flat, wide views of the river that shaped northern China.

Day trips from Zhengzhou

  • Shaolin Temple, about 90 kilometres southwest on Mount Song. A tourist bus runs from the P5 car park at Zhengzhou East. At launch it had four morning departures and four afternoon returns, from 50 CNY, booked in the “豫州行” mini-program (The Paper, 2023).
  • Luoyang and the Longmen Grottoes: 40 minutes by train. That said, Luoyang deserves its own night.
  • Yin Xu in Anyang: the later Shang capital, about 36 minutes north. It pairs naturally with the Shang wall here.
  • Yuntai Mountain: gorges and a tall waterfall near Jiaozuo. It needs a full, early day.

What to Eat in Zhengzhou

The dish to order is huimian, braised noodles. Wide, hand-pulled wheat ribbons simmer in mutton broth with sliced lamb, tofu skin and coriander. The noodles soak up the soup rather than just sitting in it. A bowl is filling, cheap and everywhere, so it tends to become a daily habit.

Breakfast is its own event. Hulatang, a thick, peppery soup, is the Henan standard, and it wakes you up fast. Pair it with fried dough sticks, as at any Chinese breakfast. In the evening, night-market streets sell skewers, stuffed flatbreads and grilled mutton.

Practical Tips for Zhengzhou

  • Book museums in advance. The Henan Museum and the Shang museum both use real-name reservations, and weekends sell out.
  • Carry your passport. You need it for trains, hotels and every museum entry.

  • Expect little English. Museum labels are bilingual, but restaurants mostly are not. Save your hotel’s address in Chinese.

Common Mistakes in Zhengzhou

  • Only changing trains. The museum alone justifies a night.
  • Turning up at the museum on a Monday. Both big museums close, unless it is a public holiday.
  • Arriving without a booking. Walk-up entry is not guaranteed, especially on weekends.
  • Going to the wrong station. East, West and the old central station are far apart.
  • Doing Shaolin as an afternoon trip. The ride is long, so leave in the morning.
  • Missing the Shang wall. It is free, central and easy to walk past without noticing.

How many days do you need?

A Capital Hiding in Plain Sight

The city does not sell itself well. The first impression is traffic and glass towers, and that is exactly why people keep passing through. Look again, though, and there is a Bronze Age wall beside the bus stop and one of China’s great museums up the road.
