Beijing Sport University is China’s national sports university, and that phrase carries more weight than it sounds like it does. Founded in 1953 as the Central Institute of Physical Education, renamed in 1956, and given its current name in 1993, the school sits under the direct administration of the General Administration of Sport of China (Beijing Sport University [BSU], 2025). It is a Project 211 university and part of the national Double First-Class initiative. If you want to study sport science, coaching, sports medicine or physical education in China, this is the address.

What Beijing Sport University Actually Is

A specialist institution, not a general campus

Most Chinese universities you have heard of are comprehensive. This one is not. The whole institution is built around sport, and the structure shows it: four academic divisions covering Sport and Health Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Olympic Sports, and Sports Engineering (BSU, 2025).

Underneath those divisions sit schools you will not find elsewhere — the School of Competitive Sports, the China Football College, the School of Sports Engineering, which also runs the China Sports Big Data Center. The campus additionally hosts the National Coaches College and the China Olympic Academy. In other words, national sports administration and the university share the same ground.

Project 211 and Double First-Class status

The university describes itself as a national key institution, a Project 211 priority-development university, and a member of both the first and the current round of Double First-Class construction (BSU, 2025). Those labels decide funding, doctoral authorisation and lab budgets, which is what actually matters day to day.

Does the status translate into results? The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics gives a reasonably concrete answer. BSU students and alumni contributed three golds, one silver and three bronzes to the Chinese delegation’s fifteen medals, including Ning Zhongyan’s Olympic record in the men’s 1500m speed skating (BSU, 2026).

Programmes Open to International Students at Beijing Sport University

Degree programmes

The 2026 prospectus sets out three degree tracks, and the numbers are precise:

  • Bachelor’s — 20 majors open to international students, four years.
  • Master’s — 13 majors. Three years for academic master’s, two years for the professional master’s in International Chinese Education.
  • Doctoral — 7 majors, four years.

The exact major list and per-programme tuition live in an attachment to the prospectus, and it changes yearly. Check the current one rather than trusting a summary — including this one.

Is anything taught in English?

No, and the prospectus is blunt about it. Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral courses are all “taught in Chinese” (BSU, 2025). There is no English-medium degree track advertised for 2026.

That single fact filters out a lot of applicants, so it is worth sitting with before you plan anything else. English scores do appear in the requirements — IELTS 6 or TOEFL iBT 90 — but only as a second-language check for applicants whose first language is not English. They do not buy you an English-taught seat.

Non-degree routes: Chinese, wushu and TCM

Two non-degree programmes run alongside the degrees, and both are more accessible. Programme A is the Chinese language track, offered at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels, with courses in speaking, listening, reading, writing, calligraphy and Chinese painting.

Programme B is arguably the more distinctive one: year-round advanced courses in wushu, sanda, sports health maintenance, traditional Chinese medicine massage and sports rehabilitation. Both run for one semester or one year and end in a certificate of completion. The age window is wide — 18 to 55 — and no HSK certificate is listed among the required materials.

The Beijing Sport University Campus and Location

The address is No. 48 Xinxi Road, Haidian District — Beijing’s university quarter, the same neighbourhood as Peking University and Tsinghua. The campus covers roughly 755,000 square metres with about 460,000 square metres of floor space, and holds close to 100 indoor and outdoor training venues (BSU, 2025).

That venue count is the number to notice. A comprehensive university might have a stadium and a gym. Here the training facilities are the teaching infrastructure.

Published figures put enrolment at roughly 9,500 undergraduates and 3,100 postgraduates, with 297 international students, alongside more than 600 full-time teachers, 18 national coaches and 44 international referees (BSU, n.d.). Note the date stamp on that page — the data runs to June 2020, so treat it as a shape rather than a current count. The international cohort is small either way.

Admission Requirements and HSK Levels

The language bar

The HSK thresholds are stated plainly in the 2026 prospectus:

  • Undergraduate — HSK Level 4 or above.
  • Master’s and doctoral — HSK Level 5 or above.

One useful exemption: applicants who already hold a degree from a Chinese university where Chinese was the language of instruction do not need to supply an HSK certificate at all. Our guide to the HSK level needed for university in China explains what each band actually involves.

The extra test undergraduates must sit

This one catches people out. Beyond HSK 4, undergraduate applicants must also take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment — the CSCA — administered by the China Scholarship Council, and obtain a valid score (BSU, 2025). Which subjects you sit depends on your intended major, and that mapping is in the programme catalogue.

Age matters too. Undergraduate applicants should be between 18 and 30 as of 1 September in the enrolment year, and must hold a qualification equivalent to a Chinese senior high school diploma.

Documents

Expect the standard file: passport information page valid beyond 30 September 2026, graduation and degree certificates, full transcripts, language certificates, a police clearance certificate issued within six months, and a Physical Examination Form for Foreigners, also within six months.

Postgraduate applicants add more. Master’s candidates write a research plan of at least 800 characters in Chinese; doctoral candidates need 1,500. Both submit two recommendation letters from associate professors or above. Anything not in Chinese or English needs a notarised translation. Nothing is posted — the whole application is uploaded.

Tuition and Living Costs at Beijing Sport University

Fees are published openly, which is not universal among Chinese universities. The 2026 figures (BSU, 2025):

  • Undergraduate — CNY 25,000–28,000 per academic year.
  • Master’s — CNY 30,000–34,000 per academic year.
  • Doctoral — CNY 40,000–45,000 per academic year.
  • Non-degree — CNY 10,000 per semester, or CNY 20,000 per year.

Accommodation is charged daily rather than by term: CNY 70 per person per day for a twin room, CNY 120 for a single. Run the arithmetic before you assume the twin room is cheap — over a full academic year it adds up to a real number.

Then the smaller items: insurance at CNY 800 per academic year, a visa fee of around CNY 500, and a medical examination at roughly CNY 400. Medical insurance inside China is not optional. Students without it cannot complete registration.

Scholarships Available at Beijing Sport University

Four schemes are listed, and they work through different channels:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship — applied for through the China Scholarship Council, embassies or consulates, not through the university.
  • International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (Confucius Institute Scholarship) — organised by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation.
  • Beijing Government Scholarship — applied for directly to the university, then assessed under Beijing Municipal Education Commission rules.
  • BSU Belt and Road Scholarship — full or partial, applied for at the same time as your programme application.

Award amounts for the first three are “subject to the official announcement” each year, so any specific number you see quoted elsewhere should be checked. The Belt and Road award is the one to note, mainly because it is applied for alongside the ordinary application — miss that box and you have missed it. How to Apply to Beijing Sport University

Everything runs online through the university’s system at ims.bsu.edu.cn. Register, then upload. The 2026 windows:

  • Autumn intake (September start) — applications from 1 December 2025 to 1 June 2026.
  • Spring intake (March start) — 1 December 2025 to 27 January 2026, non-degree applicants only.

After the documents come the interviews. Every applicant faces an online video interview, and results are ranked in late June, released late June to early July. Admission letters and the JW201/JW202 visa form are mailed in mid-July, with the process closing in August (BSU, 2025).

Is Beijing Sport University the Right Choice?

It depends almost entirely on your Chinese. Without HSK 4, the degree route is closed, and no amount of athletic background changes that. The non-degree wushu, sanda and TCM courses stay open, and for many people those are the realistic entry point anyway.

But if you can work in Chinese and your field is sport — coaching, sports medicine, sports engineering, sports management — the combination on offer is genuinely hard to match. National training venues, Olympic coaching staff and the country’s sports administration all sit on one Haidian campus. That concentration is the argument, and it is a reasonably strong one. One practical caution to close on. Programme lists, fees and test requirements shift year to year, so confirm the current prospectus with the international office in writing before you commit money or time.
