Study at BJUT: The CSCA Exam Every Applicant Must Sit

To study at BJUT — Beijing University of Technology — is to apply to a university that has stopped taking undergraduates on paperwork alone. Founded in 1960 and admitted to Project 211 in 1996, it now asks every international undergraduate applicant to sit a national entrance test, in named subjects, before the file counts as complete.

That test is the CSCA, and BJUT’s 2026 prospectus is unusually blunt about it. So this guide walks the exam, the two application windows tied to specific sitting dates, the fees, and the preparatory year the university offers applicants who are not ready. It is a narrow, well-signposted route. It just is not the one most agents describe.

Why Study at BJUT: One Discipline, Beijing-Sized

211 and Double First-Class status, stated plainly

BJUT is a 211 university, not a 985. It entered Project 211 in 1996 and joined the Double First-Class list in 2017, then survived the first review and made the second round in 2022. Its Double First-Class discipline is a single one: civil engineering (Beijing University of Technology College of Architecture and Civil Engineering, n.d.).

One discipline sounds thin. In practice it is a statement of where the money goes. Structural engineering here was named a national key discipline back in 2007, and eleven of the university’s fields sit in the ESI global top 1%, with engineering in the top 1‰ (BJUT, 2025). A municipal university, and why that matters to you

Most famous Chinese universities answer to the Ministry of Education. BJUT does not — Beijing city runs it, and funds it. Foreign applicants rarely notice the distinction, yet it shapes two practical things.

First, the research agenda leans hard toward the city itself: seismic safety, urban infrastructure, transport, environment. Second, the Beijing Government Scholarship sits close to home here rather than being a distant municipal scheme. That is a real advantage, and it is worth building an application around.

Location and the commute

The main campus stands at 100 Pingleyuan in Chaoyang, inside the south-east Fourth Ring Road. Subway Line 14 stops at BJUT West Gate and at Pingleyuan, and Line 7 connects one stop away at Jiulongshan. The CBD is fifteen minutes north, which matters for internships far more than any brochure line about “industry links”.

Admissions: How to Apply to Study at BJUT

The CSCA exam is step one, not step five

Every international undergraduate applicant must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment and hold a score (BJUT, 2025). The subject combination follows the major. Engineering and science programmes take Chinese, mathematics and physics or chemistry; economics, law and management take Chinese and mathematics; the English-taught international economics and trade programme takes mathematics, examined in English.

Then the calendar bites. Stage one runs 1 November 2025 to 16 January 2026 and accepts the December 2025 sitting only. Stage two runs 23 February to 31 May 2026 and accepts the December, January, March and April sittings. Miss the December test and you have lost stage one outright. Language, age and grades

Chinese-taught undergraduate entry needs new HSK 4 or above. Applicants who studied their secondary compulsory courses in Chinese can be exempted. Undergraduate applicants must be at least 18 and no older than 25; master’s applicants under 35; doctoral applicants under 40 (BJUT, 2025).

High school averages should not fall below 80%, or a GPA of 3.0. English-taught doctoral entry asks for TOEFL 85, IELTS 6.5, TOEIC 750 or Duolingo 110 — noticeably higher bands than most 211 postgraduate routes.

The preparatory year, which is the real safety net

Here is the part almost no English guide mentions. If you miss the HSK 4 bar or the CSCA requirement, BJUT does not simply reject you. It directs you to a self-funded preparatory year at one of its partner institutions — Northeast Normal University or Huaqiao University — and asks you to name your choice in the study plan.

You register on both application systems, and both courses start in September. Interviews come after the preliminary review, held online or in person, and formal admission letters go out from 1 July.

Documents

  • Passport valid beyond 30 September of the entry year, plus the online application form.
  • Notarised high school diploma or expected-graduation certificate, and transcripts for every year.
  • CSCA score report, and the new HSK 4 certificate.
  • CV, study plan, foreigner physical examination form and police clearance, both dated within six months.
  • Financial guarantee letter with a bank statement, and the 500 CNY application fee receipt.
  • A portfolio for architecture, art and design applicants; a notarised guardianship deed for anyone still under 18 on 1 September.

Scholarships and Tuition at BJUT

Tuition and fees

Undergraduate tuition is 21,000 CNY a year, master’s 23,000 CNY and doctoral 30,000 CNY (BJUT, 2025). The application fee is 500 CNY, paid by bank transfer, and it is never refunded. Bachelor’s degrees run four years, five for architecture and urban and rural planning.

On-campus international apartments hold close to 400 students across roughly 200 rooms, with air conditioning, shared kitchens and laundry. Rooms are limited, so treat housing as competitive rather than automatic. Fees do move between intakes — read the current programme page, not a summary table.

Scholarship options

Two schemes carry most of the weight: the Chinese Government Scholarship, which is a full award, and the Beijing Government Scholarship. Preparatory students have their own tier system, where the upper level can apply for full-tuition funding and the lower level for half — and preparatory graduates get priority when they later apply for undergraduate awards.

Living in Beijing While You Study at BJUT

Housing and campus life

The international apartments sit on campus, which spares you a Chaoyang rent and a commute. Off-campus studios nearby start well above dormitory rates. Apply early; nearly 400 beds does not go far.

Cost of living

Canteen meals stay in single-digit to low-double-digit yuan. Budget roughly 2,500 to 4,000 CNY a month with a dormitory included, and more if you eat out in the CBD often. Beijing is expensive; student Beijing is not.

Visiting the Campus Before You Apply

Chinese campuses control their gates, and BJUT is no exception. Register in advance or arrange for a student or member of staff to sign you in, and carry your passport. Turning up unannounced rarely works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to sit the CSCA to study at BJUT?

For undergraduate entry, yes. The 2026 prospectus requires a CSCA score in the subjects listed for your chosen major, and the application is incomplete without it.

What HSK level does BJUT require?

Conclusion: Is BJUT Worth It?

If you want engineering in Beijing at a municipal price, and you can pass an exam in Chinese, then yes. Civil engineering, transport, materials and computing all sit on solid ground, and the city outside the gate is the laboratory. If your Chinese is not there yet, take the preparatory year seriously instead of gambling on stage two.
