Study at Capital Normal University: Chinese, Teaching and Maths

Oct 13, 2026

To study at Capital Normal University is to learn Chinese, or learn to teach it, at a Beijing teachers’ university that most foreign applicants never shortlist. CNU was founded in 1954, and its roots go back to the Tongzhou Normal School of 1905. It is not a 985 or a 211 school. Even so, mathematics has kept it on the national Double First-Class list since 2017 (Ministry of Education, 2022).

So here is the doubt this guide tries to settle. Haidian already has famous names, so why pick the “other” normal university on the West Third Ring Road? The short answer: smaller classes of foreigners, cheaper fees than many of its neighbours, and a scholarship pipeline built around Chinese teaching. Below are the 2026–27 fees, the HSK bars, the CSCA test and the scholarships, all checked against the university’s own notices.

Why Study at Capital Normal University: Chinese, Teaching and Maths

Double First-Class status, stated plainly

CNU is neither a 985 nor a 211 school. Still, it sits on the Double First-Class list, with mathematics as its listed discipline in the first round in 2017 and again in the second round of February 2022 (Ministry of Education, 2022). Beijing and the Ministry of Education co-run it. Put simply, it is the capital city’s own flagship for teacher education.

That badge rewards one discipline, not a brand, so read it that way. For the full picture, our guides to China’s 985 and 211 universities and the top universities in China explain how the three labels fit together.

A Chinese-teaching school first

For international students, though, the real centre of gravity is language. CNU was one of the earliest Chinese universities to take foreign students. Today it holds the Ministry of Education’s title as a demonstration base for international student education, and it runs a preparatory programme as well as an HSK test centre (Capital Normal University, 2026e). Its College of International Education dates from 1999. It also helps run Confucius Institutes in Russia, Italy, Peru and Germany (Capital Normal University, n.d.).

Numbers vary a little by page. The prospectus says roughly 2,000 long- and short-term international students a year, while the English site says about 2,500 from around 100 countries. Either way, that is a sizeable but not overwhelming community.

How it compares with its Haidian neighbours

Two schools nearby cover similar ground. Beijing Normal University is the 985 heavyweight of teacher training, and Beijing Language and Culture University is the specialist that teaches Chinese at scale. CNU sits between them: a full university of about 30,000 students, with all majors open to foreigners. Popular choices include Chinese language, TCSOL, history, archaeology, calligraphy and geographic information science (Capital Normal University, n.d.).

Programmes and intakes

Timing matters here. The autumn intake is the full menu: 57 bachelor’s majors on the 2026 list, plus master’s and PhD study, plus language courses. In 2026 its deadline was 30 June (Capital Normal University, 2026b). The spring 2027 intake, by contrast, opens only three tracks — the Chinese Language bachelor’s, the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) bachelor’s, and non-degree Chinese training. Applications for spring close on 31 December 2026 (Capital Normal University, 2026e).

English-taught options exist, but they are few. The 2026 major list shows one English-taught bachelor’s, international economics and trade. Some master’s and PhD majors also teach in English. The English site adds geographic information science as open in English at every level, although the 2026 bachelor’s list shows it as Chinese-taught — so confirm with the college first.

Language, age and the CSCA test

  • Chinese Language bachelor’s: HSK 3 with 210 or more; aged 25 or under.
  • TCSOL bachelor’s: HSK 4 with 210 or more.
  • Other bachelor’s, master’s and PhD: HSK 5 with 210 or more; master’s applicants 35 or under, PhD 40 or under.
  • English-taught study: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 85.
  • Chinese training: HSK 3 at least — complete beginners are not accepted; age limit 60.

Bachelor’s applicants must also sit the CSCA test. For the Chinese tracks that means liberal-arts subject Chinese plus mathematics, and a valid HSK 4 report can waive the subject-Chinese paper (Capital Normal University, 2026e). Our explainer on the CSCA exam covers dates and papers. Meanwhile, the HSK level for university guide sets out what each band means.

How to apply

  1. Register at cnu.17gz.org, fill in the form and upload your documents.
  2. Once the file passes review, pay the non-refundable application fee online.
  3. Check the portal for your result, then use the admission notice and JW202 form to apply for an X1 visa.

Degree applicants also need the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Students transferring from another Chinese school need a transfer or completion certificate.

Scholarships and Tuition at Capital Normal University

What a semester costs

CNU quotes fees per semester, not per year, which is easy to miss. The 2026–27 rates are (Capital Normal University, 2026b):

  • Chinese training: 9,800 CNY a semester; application fee 450 CNY
  • Chinese Language or TCSOL bachelor’s, and humanities bachelor’s: 11,800 CNY
  • Science bachelor’s 13,800 CNY; arts and English-taught bachelor’s 14,500 CNY
  • Master’s: 13,800–17,500 CNY, depending on field; application fee 800 CNY
  • PhD: 15,800–20,500 CNY
  • Short courses: 1,100 CNY for one week, 3,300 CNY for four

Housing is charged by the day and paid by the semester: 160 CNY for a single room, 80 for a double and 40 for a four-person room. A double therefore runs to roughly 2,400 CNY a month. Chinese medical insurance is compulsory before registration.

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

For anyone who plans to study at Capital Normal University on a budget, this is the award that fits best. It covers tuition, housing, a living allowance and insurance. In 2026 it funded a four-year TCSOL bachelor’s, a two-year master’s, a four-year PhD in international Chinese education, plus one-year and one-semester study (Capital Normal University, 2026a). Applicants are generally 16–35, and serving Chinese teachers up to 45.

Note the date. The one-semester award for March 2027 closes on 31 October 2026, and it asks for HSK 3 at 180 plus an HSKK result (Capital Normal University, 2026d). You apply through chinese.cn and a recommending body, such as a Confucius Institute, and then on CNU’s portal.

Beijing and Chinese Government scholarships

The Beijing Government Scholarship comes in three classes. Class A pays tuition, housing, living costs and insurance; B drops the allowance; C covers tuition and insurance only. The 2026 deadline was 30 June (Capital Normal University, 2026c). CNU also takes Chinese Government Scholarship students, both through its own university programme and through bilateral routes. Our CSC scholarship application walkthrough explains how, while scholarships in China compares the options.

Living in Beijing While You Study at Capital Normal University

Campus and housing

CNU spreads over several campuses, but foreign students mostly gather around the College of International Education building on the North 1 campus. The university runs its own international student apartments. Because rooms are priced by the day, a short stay costs little, whereas a full year in a single room adds up fast.

Costs and getting around

Beijing is among China’s dearer cities, so budget honestly. Campus canteens keep food cheap, but rent is the big variable. The West Third Ring Road location helps, too: several metro lines run within reach, and the university zone of Haidian is close by. For the wider city, our guide to Beijing covers transport, payments and neighbourhoods.

Weekends in Haidian

Haidian is Beijing’s campus district, and it shows. The ruins of the Old Summer Palace lie a short metro ride north. Bookshops, cafés and language partners are everywhere — which, for someone learning Chinese, is honestly half the point.

Visiting the Capital Normal University Campus

The main campus is easy to spot from the road: a red-brick main building with a glass front, and a huge striped boulder on the square before it. Bring your passport, since Beijing campus gates usually register visitors. Rules change, so check with the College of International Education before you go.
