To study at Hunan Normal University is to join a school that was born as a wartime teachers’ college and still thinks like one. It opened in 1938 as the National Normal College, China’s first independent teachers’ college. Today it is a Project 211 university with a single Double First-Class discipline, and that discipline is foreign languages and literature.

The word “normal” puts people off. Does it mean you have to train as a schoolteacher? No. Still, the label points at the real reason to look here: two scholarships built around language and language teaching, one with a deadline this autumn. Why Study at Hunan Normal University: Languages First

211 and Double First-Class status, stated plainly

HNNU is a 211 university, not a 985. In September 2017 its foreign languages and literature discipline joined the national Double First-Class list. At the time it was the only discipline from a Hunan provincial university to make it. The discipline was selected again in 2022 (Hunan Normal University School of Foreign Studies, n.d.).

The roots go deep. English was one of the college’s seven founding departments, and its first head was Qian Zhongshu, later the author of Fortress Besieged. Beyond languages, the university reports 11 disciplines in the ESI global top 1%, including chemistry, clinical medicine and materials science (Hunan Normal University, 2025). A “normal” university, and not the one Mao attended

“Normal” is the old word for teacher training. At HNNU it describes a specialism, not a limit. The university runs 24 colleges covering 12 disciplinary categories, and has more than 40,000 students (Hunan Normal University, 2025).

One mix-up comes up again and again. Mao Zedong studied at Hunan First Normal, a separate institution across the river (Wikipedia, 2026a). Also worth knowing: HNNU has close to 1,000 international students, counting long and short programmes. That is a small cohort. It means more attention from staff, but a thinner support network.

Location: under Yuelu Mountain, on Line 4

The main campus sits on Lushan Road at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, next door to Hunan University. Changsha Metro Line 4 opened a station inside the campus in May 2019 (Wikipedia, 2026b). The same line runs to Changsha South railway station, so you can get from a high-speed train to your dormitory without changing lines.

Admissions: How to Apply to Study at Hunan Normal University

Intakes, and the CSCA for undergraduates

Degree programmes admit in the autumn only. Non-degree language study starts in either spring or autumn and lasts one semester or one year (Hunan Normal University, 2025).

From the 2026/2027 year, undergraduate applicants must sit the CSCA before applying. Mathematics is compulsory for everyone. Chinese-taught programmes add subject Chinese, in either the humanities or the science version. Science, engineering, agriculture and medicine applicants also take physics or chemistry. Language and age limits

  • Chinese-taught bachelor’s: HSK 4 or above.
  • Chinese-taught master’s and doctorate: HSK 5 or above.
  • English-taught programmes: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 85, if English is not your first language.
  • Age: at least 18; under 25 for a bachelor’s, under 35 for a master’s, under 40 for a doctorate, under 50 for non-degree study.

Two items most applicants don’t expect

First, a personal video. HNNU asks for two to five minutes, in Chinese or English, covering your academic background, study plan, strengths and plans after graduation. Second, the online application includes a psychological questionnaire you must complete before you can submit (Hunan Normal University, 2025).

The rest is familiar. You need a notarised diploma and transcripts, a study plan (600+ words for undergraduates, 1,000+ for postgraduates) and two professors’ letters for postgraduate programmes. You also need the foreigner physical examination form and a police certificate. Both of those must be dated within six months, so time them carefully. No paper copies need to be posted.

Scholarships and Tuition at Hunan Normal University

Tuition and fees

Fees are per year, in CNY, from the 2026 admission guide (Hunan Normal University, 2025):

  • Chinese language study: 8,500 a semester, or 17,000 a year.
  • Bachelor’s, Chinese-taught: 18,000 humanities; 20,000 science or medicine; 26,000 arts or sport.
  • Bachelor’s, English-taught: 23,000 humanities; 26,000 science; 20,000 computer science; 34,000 arts or sport.
  • Master’s, Chinese-taught: 22,000 humanities; 24,000 science; 32,000 medicine, arts or sport.
  • Doctorate, Chinese-taught: 24,000 humanities; 26,000 science; 35,000 medicine, arts or sport.

On top of tuition you pay 530 for the medical check, 500 a year for textbooks and 800 a year for insurance. Rooms cost 20 CNY a day in a double or 10 CNY in a four-person room. The guide notes that fees follow the university’s current rates, so check again before you pay.

The Chinese teacher route, with a 31 October deadline

HNNU hosts the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. It is fully funded: tuition, a free campus room, a monthly living allowance and medical insurance. Applicants must be 16 to 35, or up to 45 for serving Chinese teachers (Hunan Normal University, 2026a).

  • Master’s in International Chinese Language Education (two years): HSK 5 at 210 and HSKK intermediate at 60.
  • Doctorate (four years): HSK 6 at 200 and HSKK advanced at 60.
  • One-year study: HSK 3 at 270, plus an HSKK score.
  • One-semester study: HSK 3 at 180, plus an HSKK score, starting in September or March.

Here is the timely part. The deadline for September 2026 entry has passed, but the one-semester March 2027 intake closes on 31 October 2026, Beijing time. You apply on chinese.cn and on HNNU’s portal at the same time. South China Normal University offers the same scholarship, which makes comparing the two easy. The First-Class Discipline award, and the rest

HNNU’s own award is worth 50,000 CNY a year. It waives tuition and pays 2,166 CNY a month for living costs. Accommodation is provided, but you pay for it out of the award. There are three doctoral places and five master’s places, all in the School of Foreign Studies. That covers English, translation, linguistics, comparative literature, and Russian, Japanese, French and German literature. The 2026 round closed on 31 May, and it cannot be combined with government awards (Hunan Normal University, 2026b).

The Chinese Government Scholarship uses HNNU’s agency code 10542. The guide gives March to June as the university’s CSC window, though embassy routes can close earlier. Hunan province adds two more awards. One is a one-year language award for Belt and Road countries that covers fees but no stipend. Living in Changsha While You Study at Hunan Normal University

Housing and cost of living

A double room comes to roughly 600 CNY a month, and a four-person room about half that. The university budgets around 2,000 CNY a month for living costs. That is realistic in Changsha, which costs noticeably less than Beijing or Shanghai. Eating out every night will push it higher, though.

Food, heat and getting set up

Changsha summers are hot and humid, and the food is hotter. Hunan cuisine relies on fresh chilli rather than numbing pepper, so expect a week or two of adjustment. Visiting the Campus Before You Apply

Take Line 4 to the Hunan Normal University station and walk uphill toward the mountain. Peach Lake and the Yuelu Academy area are close by. Campus access rules in China change often, so carry your passport and email the admissions office before you go.

What HSK level do I need to study at Hunan Normal University?

No. Mao studied at Hunan First Normal, a different institution in Changsha. The names are close, but they are separate schools.

Foreign languages and literature is the national flagship. Education, the humanities and several sciences, chemistry among them, are also strong.

Conclusion: Is Hunan Normal University Worth It?

If your plans involve languages, translation or teaching Chinese, it is a strong choice. The scholarship routes are clear, and Changsha is cheaper than the coastal cities. If you want an engineering brand, Central South University down the road probably fits better. Either way, start early and give the video more effort than you think it needs.
