To study at Northeast Forestry University is to enrol at a school whose campus is measured in hectares of forest rather than in buildings. NEFU opened in 1952, built from the forestry departments of Zhejiang University and Northeast Agricultural College, and it is a Project 211 university with two Double First-Class disciplines: forestry engineering and forestry (Northeast Forestry University, n.d.).

Here is the doubt that brings most applicants to this page. A forestry university sounds narrow. It is not, and the numbers say so — eight subject areas in the global ESI top 1%, a tiger research centre run for the national forestry administration, and fees of 16,500 CNY a year for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s. Why Study at Northeast Forestry University: The Campus Is a Forest

211 and Double First-Class status, stated plainly

NEFU entered Project 211 in October 2005 and is not a 985 school. It joined the national Double First-Class programme in September 2017, then kept its place in the second round in February 2022. Two disciplines carry that label: forestry engineering and forestry. Four more sit on the national key list — biology, ecology, landscape architecture, and agricultural and forestry economics (Northeast Forestry University, n.d.).

Academic strengths reach well past trees

Eight of the university’s subject areas rank in the ESI global top 1%: plant and animal sciences, agricultural sciences, environment and ecology, chemistry, materials science, engineering, biology and biochemistry, and geosciences. Materials science, for instance, grew out of wood chemistry and now covers composites and bio-based polymers. So the “forestry” name undersells the spread — as it does at Beijing Forestry University, the other 211 in the same field.

The university runs 22 colleges, one teaching department and a Hainan International College, unveiled in May 2024 inside the Lingshui Li’an international education zone. That last one is worth knowing about. It gives a school famous for snow a set of degree programmes taught in the tropics, with overseas partner universities.

The tiger centre and two forest farms

NEFU hosts the Feline Research Center of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, the institution behind much of China’s Amur tiger and Amur leopard work. Meanwhile the teaching estate is genuinely unusual. The Harbin campus covers about 136 hectares, but the Maoershan and Liangshui experimental forest farms push the university’s total area to roughly 33,000 hectares.

Maoershan, founded in 1958 and now a national forest park, alone runs to about 26,291 hectares. Field courses happen there rather than in a lab basement. For ecology, wildlife or forest engineering students, that is the single strongest argument for the place.

Two routes to study at Northeast Forestry University

Everything starts at one portal, istudy.nefu.edu.cn. From there the routes split. You apply either as a self-funded student, or through a scholarship scheme that has its own earlier deadline. The application fee is 400 CNY per person, and it is not refundable.

Degrees run in Chinese or in English. Bachelor’s programmes take four years, although urban and rural planning takes five. Master’s programmes run three years, with English-taught research directions in ecology, environmental science and engineering, forestry, food science and engineering, and forestry engineering.

Language requirements, by subject not by degree

This is the part applicants get wrong. The Chinese bar depends on your discipline. Science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management and art applicants need HSK 4 at 180 points or above. Literature and law applicants need HSK 5 at 180 or above (Northeast Forestry University, 2022).

English-taught study has its own bar: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 for a bachelor’s, and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 95 for a master’s or doctorate. Fall short on Chinese and you are placed in language study first, usually for a year. Documents and deadlines

The current programme pages set 30 June as the cut-off for a September intake, for both bachelor’s and master’s applicants. Scholarship routes close much earlier, so read the next section before you plan around June.

  • Passport, valid well past your intended arrival
  • Transcripts and your highest diploma, notarised where required
  • HSK or IELTS/TOEFL certificate
  • Foreigner physical examination form
  • Non-criminal record certificate
  • Financial guarantee and a study plan

Two of these expire. Medical forms and police certificates are commonly treated as valid for six months, and at some Chinese universities for three. Date them late rather than early.

Scholarships and Tuition at Northeast Forestry University

Tuition and accommodation

Fees are modest by national standards, which is much of the appeal.

  • Bachelor’s, English-taught: 21,500 CNY a year
  • Master’s, Chinese-taught: 25,000 CNY a year
  • Master’s, English-taught: 30,000 CNY a year
  • Campus housing: 500 CNY a month in a double room, 1,000 CNY in a single

Those housing figures are per person, per month, and they include the heating that Harbin makes non-negotiable. Budget separately for insurance and the residence permit.

Scholarship options, with their real deadlines

The university’s own award is the NEFU President’s Scholarship. First prize waives tuition and accommodation, second prize waives tuition, and third prize takes 50% off tuition. It is aimed at incoming bachelor’s and master’s students, and applications close on 30 April.

NEFU also admits Chinese Government Scholarship students under the Type B university route, with agency code 10225, running roughly from November to March. That award covers tuition, accommodation and the 800 CNY annual insurance, and pays 2,500 CNY a month to undergraduates, 3,000 to master’s students and 3,500 to doctoral students. Then there is the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, which NEFU offers in one-year, one-semester and four-week forms. Its windows are fixed and easy to miss: 15 May for a September start, 15 November for the following March, 15 September for December, and 15 April for July. The one-year and one-semester awards pay 2,500 CNY a month; the four-week course does not.

Living in Harbin While You Study at Northeast Forestry University

The winter question, answered honestly

January in Harbin sits well below freezing, often around minus 20°C. That sounds brutal, and outdoors it is. Indoors it is not, because the whole city runs on district heating from October to April. Cost of living

Harbin is one of the cheaper provincial capitals. Campus canteen meals commonly run 10–20 CNY, and a modest monthly budget of 2,000–2,500 CNY covers food, transport and phone for most students. Compare that with Beijing or Shanghai, where the same life costs roughly double.

Campus and city

The campus sits in Xiangfang District, close to the Harbin Forest Botanical Garden, which effectively acts as the university’s front garden. Rail ties the city to the rest of the country, and the student crowd is large — Harbin Institute of Technology and Harbin Engineering University are both nearby, so the foreign-student community is bigger than the city’s size suggests.
