Three Gorges Dam: Walk Above It or Ride Through It

The Three Gorges Dam is the one sight on the Yangtze that most visitors see badly. Many arrive on a cruise, get walked round a viewing platform for an hour, and leave. Others take a taxi from Yichang, reach the gate and find they can neither drive in nor book the way Chinese visitors do. Neither group finds out that the most memorable way to meet the dam is from a boat, rising 113 metres in a steel tank.

So this guide splits the visit in two. First, the land visit: what the 35 CNY shuttle covers, how foreign passport holders get in, and which viewpoint matters. Second, the water visit: the ship lift, its four daily sailings, and why it can be cancelled on the day.

What the Three Gorges Dam Actually Is

The dam stands at Sandouping, in Yiling District of Yichang, Hubei. It is a concrete gravity dam 2,309 metres long with its crest at 185 metres above sea level. Behind it the reservoir holds 39.3 billion cubic metres at a normal level of 175 metres, and its 32 main turbines of 700 MW each, plus two small units, give an installed capacity of 22.5 million kW (Executive Office of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee, 2015).

Construction began in December 1994. The river was closed off in November 1997, and the dam reached full height in May 2006. The tourist area around it was approved in 2007 as one of China’s first 5A scenic areas (Wenhui Bao, 2014). Numbers like these are hard to feel on paper. From Tanziling, though, they suddenly make sense.

Why the Three Gorges Dam Is Worth the Trip

Photos flatten it. In person the dam runs from one ridge to the next, and the five-step ship locks cut beside it like a staircase blasted into the hillside. Chinese guides call the locks the “fourth gorge” of the Yangtze. It sounds like marketing until you look down into one.

The ship lift, a lift for boats

Next to the locks is the ship lift. It raises or lowers a water-filled chamber, boat and all, through 113 metres, with a gross lifted weight of about 15,500 tonnes — the largest lift of its kind in the world (Executive Office of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee, 2015). The locks take hours. The lift takes a fraction of that, and you ride it standing on deck.

A debate worth understanding

The dam is not simply a monument. It protects millions of people downstream from floods and replaces roughly 50 million tonnes of coal a year, yet the reservoir also moved whole towns and changed the gorges upstream. Sites such as Baidicheng at Qutang Gorge turned from a hillside into an island as the water rose. Seeing the dam helps you read the rest of the river.

Best Time to Visit the Three Gorges Dam

April–May and late September–October bring the clearest air and mild walking weather. Summer is hot and hazy, but it is also flood season, and the chance of seeing water released through the spillway is probably highest then. Winter is quiet and grey. The reservoir sits at its highest from late autumn, which makes the lake above the dam look its widest.

Avoid the first week of October if you can. The shuttle queues during Golden Week are long, and the daily booking cap for the site is 36,000 people.

Getting to the Three Gorges Dam From Yichang

Yichang is the base. Since the new Wuhan–Yichang high-speed line opened on 26 December 2025, the fastest trains from Wuhan take about 69 minutes (CGTN, 2025), and Chongqing is further up the line. The dam is about 40 km upstream of the city.

  • Bus 216: the intercity bus runs from Junyao Plaza (均瑶广场) in Yichang, or from the Yemingzhu (夜明珠) stop, to the dam’s visitor transfer centre. The fare is 15 CNY and buses leave about every 40 minutes (Yichang Three Gorges Travel, n.d.).
  • Taxi or ride-hailing: the easiest option for a group of three or four.
  • Day tour: useful if you want the ship lift, since tours bundle the boat, transfers and timing.

Seeing the Three Gorges Dam From Land

How entry works, and the foreigner ticket question

Every visitor starts at the transfer centre. You pass a security check, then board the scenic-area shuttle — private cars and walking in are not allowed. The shuttle costs 35 CNY per person, and children under 1.2 m ride free. Gates open at 8:00 and stop admitting at 17:00 (Yichang Tourism Net, 2026).

Chinese visitors book online by ID card. Foreign passport holders, meanwhile, go to the ticket window at the centre and register there. The price is where it gets unclear. When entry became free in September 2014, the free ticket covered Chinese visitors — including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese, and foreigners still paid 105 CNY, which included the shuttle (Wenhui Bao, 2014; The Paper, 2014). Current local price lists mention only the 35 CNY shuttle. Bring your passport, budget for 105 CNY, and treat anything less as a pleasant surprise.

Tanziling, the 185 Platform and the Closure Park

  • Tanziling (坛子岭): the survey point used to plan the dam, at 262.48 m. It is the best single view, taking in the dam and the ship locks together. Go here first.
  • 185 Platform: level with the crest, at the left-bank end. It is the closest you get to standing on the dam itself.
  • Closure Memorial Park (截流纪念园): 800 m downstream, built around the concrete tetrahedrons and machinery left from the 1997 river closure.

Allow about three and a half hours for all three. Shuttles run roughly every 20 minutes between stops.

Riding Through the Three Gorges Dam by Ship Lift

This is the part most English guides skip. Tourist boats run through the ship lift between Taipingxi, above the dam, and Sandouping, below it. Since 18 February 2026 there have been four sailings a day: downstream at 8:00 and 14:00, upstream at 11:00 and 17:00 (Meicheng Travel, 2026). Popular day tours combine a morning boat through the Gezhouba lock and Xiling Gorge with an afternoon ride through the lift, from about 358 CNY per person including transfers (Yichang Tourism Net, n.d.).

There is a catch. The lift is working shipping infrastructure first and an attraction second. Sailings can be cancelled for maintenance, traffic control or weather, sometimes on the day, and operators say so plainly. Confirm the day before, and do not book a train or flight tightly around a lift sailing.

What to Eat Around Yichang

Food near the dam is basic, so eat in Yichang. Look for liangxia (凉虾), a cold rice-jelly drink with brown-sugar syrup that locals live on in summer. Radish fritters (萝卜饺子), crisp and peppery, are the street snack people queue for. Yangtze fish dishes are everywhere too, although wild river fishing has been banned since 2021, so the fish on the plate is farmed.

Practical Tips for the Three Gorges Dam

  • Passport: carry the original. Checks at the transfer centre are strict, and boats also check ID at boarding.

  • Payment: shuttle and boat tickets are easiest by Alipay or WeChat Pay; carry some cash for the bus.
  • Security: this is critical infrastructure, so leave the drone at the hotel and follow any no-photo signs.
  • Next stops: Shennongjia is a few hours north for forest and mountains.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Expecting to walk on the dam. Standard visits stay off the crest; the 185 Platform, level with it, is as close as most people get.
  • Trying to book the land visit online with a passport. The online system is built around Chinese ID cards. Go to the window.
  • Arriving after 16:00. Admission stops at 17:00, and a proper visit needs three hours or more.
  • Assuming a cruise includes the ship lift. Many cruises only stop for a land tour. Ask specifically.
  • Planning a same-day train around a lift sailing. Delays and cancellations happen.
