Tsinghua University: the Good Choice to Study in China

Tsinghua University—these three words have their own aura in the air of Beijing. It is not only the college entrance examination principal graduate harvester but also the “mysterious  East campus” that many foreigners want to capture with their cameras when they first step into the northwest 5th Ring Road in the suburbs of Beijing. I mean, if you want to promote China to the world, let them walk into Tsinghua Garden first, which is easier to promote than any PowerPoint presentation.

From Boxer Indemnity to the Top 20 in the World: What Did Tsinghua Do Right?

In 1911, the Tsinghua School built with the surplus from the United States “refund” initially focused only on preparatory education for study in the U.S.; one hundred years later, it placed the school motto “self-improvement, virtue” in the twentieth position of QS in the world (QS, 2024). The key is that Tsinghua uses government strategic funds, school-enterprise collaboration, and alumni donations to achieve excellence in engineering, which then feeds back into science, social sciences, and the arts. In other words, let the laboratory produce G-Series high-speed trains, chips, and moon landing instruments, and then discuss poetry and the future—this “hardcore, then romantic” path is just the opposite of the well-known schools in Europe and America that move “from arts and sciences to engineering,” yet it intrigues foreign scholars.

Campus Architecture: The “Royal Garden” Transformed into the Science and Engineering Laboratory

Many people think that Tsinghua only has science buildings. In fact, it is a mixed museum of “Soviet style + American style + Ming style.” The two school gates, the auditorium, and the Tongfang department are 1900s American-style buildings with blue bricks and white columns, which are only separated from the Royal Garden of Qianchun Garden and Mizuki Kiyoka by a promenade. Further east, there is a 3nm lithography machine experimental platform in the glass curtain wall of the Li Zhaoji science and technology building. In contrast, the MIT campus resembles an industrial park, while Tsinghua University has built the “science museum” next to the “Gu Yue Hall”—this contrast is charming, allowing international students to take memorable photos. In the evaluation on Google Maps, rated 4.8, the most common phrase is “unreal mix.”

Foreign Students: All English Teaching + RMB 5-Digit Scholarship

Worried about the lack of Chinese? Tsinghua’s 28 English master’s programs cover AI and environmental MPP; the application interface is entirely in English, and the personal statement is acceptable. Fifty percent of courses at the school offer English classes for exchange students. Additionally, the Beijing municipal government’s “Excellence Scholarship for Foreign Students” awards master’s candidates between 40,000 to 60,000 yuan a year, which can fully cover tuition and dormitory costs (International Education Office of Tsinghua University, 2023). My colleague, Carlos from Mexico, is using this funding to study e-commerce at Tsinghua. Now he is doing cross-border e-commerce in Shenzhen. He says that “Tsinghua” is the VIP pass to Chinese business.

Working at Tsinghua University: How Many Resources Can a Work Card Unlock?

If you are not a student but a researcher or entrepreneur, Tsinghua is also open to you. The Enlightenment Star Incubator under Tsinghua Holdings offers foreign teams one year of company registration and agency support, a 2 million yuan interest-free loan line, and accommodation in the red-shirt student apartments (monthly rent of 1,200 yuan, far below the market price in Beijing). Moreover, the school and Haidian branch have jointly established the “Work in Tsinghua” green visa channel, reducing the original 15 working days for a residence permit to just 5 days (announcement from the Exit and Entry Administration Bureau of Beijing Public Security Bureau, 2022). In short, you just need to bring ideas, and someone will help you navigate the process.

Application Process: How to Include Tsinghua University on Your CV and Social Circle

  1. Degree Students: Pass the [International Students Online Application] from November to March every year at https://is.tsinghua.edu.cn. Upload your results, recommendation letters, and language qualifications; GRE scores are not necessary for AI and big data projects, but a score of 320+ can enhance your chances of being invited to an interview.
  2. Exchange Students: Directly fill out the nomination form based on the existing agreements between our school and Tsinghua; if no agreement exists, the “visiting student” channel can be used, providing 12 credits for a semester with tuition fees of about 19,000 yuan.
  3. Researchers: First, contact the laboratory; the PI will send the invitation, and then you can apply for the “high-end foreign expert” visa, which allows your spouse to join as well. Remember to highlight any international projects or data resources you can contribute in your resume. Tsinghua teachers appreciate “cooperation.”
  4. Entrepreneurs: Bring your passport and business plan to the Enlightenment Star front desk. The incubator will provide a 3-month authorization initially, with a renewal based on KPIs thereafter.

Alumni Story: When African Engineers Meet Tsinghua University Carbon Neutral

In 2019, Kevin, a Kenyan engineer, entered Tsinghua’s motor department to study photovoltaic microgrids. In his graduation year, he shipped 200 sets of off-grid inverters purchased in China back to Nairobi, electrifying three orphanages. Now, he works for a local NGO, and his project book title consistently includes “Tsinghua Alumnus.” He told me that “Tsinghua” in the African energy sector is like Cambridge in the financial sector ten years ago—people believe you first and then listen to you. It is evident that Tsinghua not only transforms a person’s resume but also illuminates the infrastructure of half a country.

Conclusion: Write Tsinghua University Into the Next Chapter of Your Life

If you plan to study, work, or start a business in China, or simply want to find a compelling reason to persuade your family to “go to Beijing,” Tsinghua University offers a low-cost, high-return opportunity with its unique background. It encapsulates a century-old  East Asian garden, the world’s top 20 academic resources, the RMB scholarship, the entrepreneurship green channel, and a subway line to the Great Wall right before you—the next step is just to click the application button. See you in Tsinghua Garden!
