Wuyuan has a spring problem. Almost every English guide sells it as a sea of yellow rapeseed in March, and then stops. Yet the county holds two 5A scenic areas, and one of them is at its best right now, in autumn. In Huangling, villagers lay out red chillies, corn and pumpkins on bamboo trays across their rooftops. The custom is called shaiqiu, “sun-drying autumn,” and it turns a cliffside village into a colour chart. So this guide flips the usual calendar. It treats autumn as the main event.

What Wuyuan Is, and Why It Has Two 5A Areas

Wuyuan is a rural county in northeast Jiangxi, bordering Anhui. Historically, it belonged to Huizhou, the same cultural region as Huangshan and its villages. That explains the look: whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs and stepped “horse-head” gables. China often calls it “the most beautiful countryside.” Honestly, the label is a slogan, but it is not far off.

Here is the part that confuses visitors. This is not one scenic area. Instead, it is a county dotted with ticketed villages. Two of them hold China’s top 5A rating:

Why Wuyuan Is Worth an Autumn Trip

The short answer is Huangling’s rooftops. Huangling clings to a steep hillside, so it has almost no flat ground. Rather than drying the harvest in a courtyard, families rack bamboo trays off the upper floors of their houses. Xinhua describes the result well: colourful trays “form a striking contrast against Hui-style houses with white walls and black tiles” (Xinhua, 2026).

For a Western comparison, think of Provence in lavender season or Vermont in fall colour. There is one difference, though. In Huangling, the colour is not a crop in a field. It is people’s food, drying on their own walls. The tradition is working agriculture that has become a spectacle, rather than a show built for tourists.

A few details make the display easier to read once you are there:

  • The colours follow the harvest. Red is usually chillies, yellow is corn or chrysanthemum, and orange is pumpkin. The mix shifts as the season moves on.
  • The racks are functional. Wooden frames jut out from the upper windows because there is simply nowhere else to put the trays.
  • The best angle is from above. The layered rooftops look flat from the lane. From a viewpoint higher up, they read like a patchwork.

Autumn also thins the crowds. The rapeseed weeks in March and early April are the busiest of the year. Outside the National Day holiday, autumn tends to be calmer.

Best Time to Visit Wuyuan

  • Late August to November: the sun-drying season. The 2026 season opened in August, and it usually runs through the autumn harvest.
  • Late October to November: probably the sweet spot. The trays are full, and the hillside trees start turning.
  • March to early April: the famous rapeseed bloom. It is beautiful, but very busy.
  • Avoid if you can: 1–6 October (National Day), when Huangling switches to peak prices and the queues are longest.

How to Get to Wuyuan

Wuyuan Station sits on the Hefei–Fuzhou high-speed railway, which opened in 2015. That puts the county on the same line as Huangshan. As a result, pairing the two is easy. From Shanghai, direct trains take roughly three and a half hours. Check current timetables on the national 12306 service before you book.

Huangling

This is the reason to come in autumn. The village has some 600 years of history (China News Service, 2024). Ride the cable car up, walk the main lane, then find a viewpoint above the drying racks. Most visitors spend three to four hours here.

Tickets, per the scenic area’s 2026 price notice (Huangling Scenic Area, 2026):

  • Entry + return cable car: 145 CNY normally, 165 CNY in peak periods.
  • Entry only: 135 CNY, or 150 CNY at peak.
  • Peak periods in 2026: Spring Festival (17–22 Feb), rapeseed season (7 Mar–6 Apr), May Day (1–4 May) and National Day (1–6 Oct).

Jiangwan

The county’s older 5A is flatter and more formal. It is a restored Huizhou village with ancestral halls and merchant mansions. It pairs well with Huangling, because the drive between them is short.

The smaller villages

Likeng, Wangkou and Xiaoqi are quieter riverside villages. The county sells a multi-day pass for them, and it also covers Jiangwan. Huangling is separate. Prices change, so confirm at the first ticket office.

A Simple Two-Day Plan

  • Day 1: arrive by train in the morning and head straight to Huangling. Take the cable car up, stay until the late-afternoon light, then sleep nearby.
  • Day 2: go early to Jiangwan, before the tour buses. After lunch, drive on to Xiaoqi or Wangkou for a quieter riverside walk, then catch an evening train.
  • Extra day: ride the high-speed line to Huangshan and add the mountain, or the villages of Hongcun and Xidi.

Local Food to Try

  • Red carp — the county’s signature fish, usually braised whole.
  • Steamed dishes — rice-flour-coated pork and vegetables, a Huizhou comfort food.
  • Dried produce — in autumn, the chillies and beans from the rooftops end up on the table too.
  • Local green tea — the county is a tea area, so a cup comes with most meals.

Practical Tips for Visiting Wuyuan
