To study at Guangzhou Medical University is to train at a school most foreign applicants have never heard of, yet one that China turns to when a lung disease makes the news. It opened in 1958 as Guangzhou Medical College (Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.-b). It never joined Project 211. Even so, it earned a place on the 2022 Double First-Class list, for clinical medicine. And its most famous professor is Zhong Nanshan, the respiratory doctor behind much of China’s public health response. So the real doubt is fair: is a low-profile city medical school a safe bet for an English-taught MBBS? Honestly, it looks like a better bet than its name suggests. Double First-Class, without 211

First, the labels. In 2022 the Ministry of Education named Guangzhou Medical University to the second round of Double First-Class universities. Its listed discipline is clinical medicine (Ministry of Education et al., 2022). That matters because the list is newer, and far more selective about disciplines, than the old 211 badge. On research, the university says clinical medicine and pharmacology & toxicology sit in the ESI global top 0.1% (Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.-a). ESI counts citations. It is a signal, not a ranking — but a hard one to fake.

Zhong Nanshan and respiratory medicine

Here is the part that surprises people. The school’s one national key discipline is internal medicine, respiratory. On top of that, it hosts the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease and the National Center for Respiratory Medicine (Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.-c). Zhong Nanshan is on its faculty. In 2020, the year the university worked on the front line against COVID-19, he received the Medal of the Republic, one of China’s highest state honours (Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.-b).

Does an MBBS student touch any of this? Partly, yes. You will not run a national lab in year two, of course. But respiratory medicine runs through the teaching hospitals. The First Affiliated Hospital, for instance, houses the National Center for Respiratory Medicine at its Datansha site (First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.). For a student eyeing pulmonology later, that is a rare thing to have on the CV.

A small, English-taught MBBS

The English-medium MBBS has run since September 2010. The 2026 notice says the Ministry of Education accredits the university to admit international students to it (GMU School of International Education, 2026a). It lasts six years, including a one-year internship. Meanwhile, the cohort stays small: 623 international students at all levels since 2010, from 47 countries (GMU School of International Education, n.d.). Small cohorts cut both ways. There is more attention, but fewer compatriots on campus.

Admissions: How to Apply to Guangzhou Medical University

Who can apply for the 2026 intake

  • Age: 18–25, with a foreign passport and a high-school diploma.
  • School subjects: physics or maths, plus biology and chemistry.
  • Grades: GPA 3.0/4.0, or C and above in every A-level. Indian applicants need 85% (state board) or 70% (CBSE), plus a NEET score of 300 or more, taken 2024–2026.
  • English: IELTS 6 (no band under 5.0), TOEFL 85 (15 per section) or Duolingo 115. Native speakers and students taught in English at high school are exempt.

The CSCA is required

This is the new hurdle. Every applicant must upload a China Scholastic Competency Assessment transcript. For the MBBS, maths and chemistry are compulsory. So book early; a missing score leaves the file incomplete. Our CSCA exam guide covers the format and dates.

Deadline, documents and the October start

For 2026, applications ran from 1 March to 30 August. However, places go first come, first served, and the window may close early. Results usually arrive within a month. After that, you must prepay the first year’s tuition and dorm fee to hold the place. Registration is in October, not September. The file needs:

  • notarised diploma and transcripts, plus any national or A-level results;
  • English certificate and the CSCA transcript;
  • a teacher’s recommendation letter;
  • a study plan of 500+ words;
  • a 3–5 minute English self-introduction video;
  • passport page, physical exam form, police certificate and a financial guarantee.

Scholarships and Tuition at Guangzhou Medical University

What a year costs

  • Tuition: 40,000 CNY a year.
  • Dorm, Panyu campus: 6,000 CNY a year.
  • Dorm, Yuexiu campus: 4,000 CNY a year.
  • Extra: books, food, insurance, utilities and visa renewals, all paid by the student.

For scale, Nanjing Medical University charges 34,000 CNY and Capital Medical University 50,000 CNY. So Guangzhou lands in the middle. Fees do change, though, so check the current notice.

Scholarship options, honestly

Here the news is thinner. The 2026 MBBS notice lists no scholarship at all. By contrast, the postgraduate guide mentions a one-off Guangdong Government award for self-funded master’s and PhD freshmen (GMU School of International Education, 2026b). Living in Guangzhou as an International Student

Two campuses, two moods

The main Panyu campus sits in Xinzao Town, in the city’s south. It is new, green and built around a lake with the library on one side. The Yuexiu campus, on Dongfeng West Road, is older and right in the city centre. That explains the dorm price gap. The university describes its undergraduate rooms as four-person suites with air conditioning and their own showers (Guangzhou Medical University, n.d.-d). Canteens also keep a Northwest-style window, partly with international students in mind.

Hospitals and cost of living

More than a dozen affiliated hospitals carry the clinical years, from the First Affiliated Hospital to a cancer centre and a women and children’s centre. As for money, Guangzhou is cheaper than Shanghai for daily life. A student eating in canteens can probably live on 2,000–3,000 CNY a month. Treat that as a rough guess, not a quote.

City life

Practical Tips Before You Commit

  • Apply in March. The first-come rule rewards early files.
  • Check licensing at home. A Chinese MBBS helps only if your own medical council accepts it. Rules change, sometimes fast.
  • Take Chinese seriously. The degree is in English, but patients speak Chinese — and often Cantonese.
  • Apply directly. Use the official system, not an agent’s promise.
