Nanjing Agricultural University doesn’t show up often in English study-abroad content. That, arguably, is exactly the point.
Founded in 1902, NAU sits in Nanjing — one of China’s ancient capitals and a city with genuine character. It holds a spot in China’s prestigious 211 Project under the Ministry of Education. More notably, it ranks #14 globally in Agriculture & Forestry by QS Subject Rankings 2025 (QS World University Rankings, 2025). Yet most students in Europe, Africa, or the Americas have never heard of it.
So — what does it actually feel like to study here?
A Campus That Sets the Tone
NAU’s main Weigang campus spreads across eastern Nanjing. It covers roughly 9 square kilometers across three sites. The surroundings are far from ordinary: the UNESCO-listed Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum sit nearby (Elmevira, 2025).
The campus itself is green and well-equipped. The library holds over 2.35 million volumes and provides access to more than 10,000 international journals (ISAC Teach, 2024). Labs are modern. Sports facilities, cafeterias, and student kitchens are spread throughout.
It’s a quiet campus — but it connects directly to the Nanjing Metro. The city is always within reach.
Why Nanjing Agricultural University Is Worth Considering
Let’s be direct. NAU is a specialist university. Its identity is specific, and that’s a strength.
In China’s national discipline evaluation, several NAU programs earned A+ ratings:
- Crop Science
- Plant Protection
- Agricultural Resources and Environment
- Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management
Food Science and Engineering holds an A- rating. Veterinary Sciences ranks #1 in China (China Admissions, n.d.).
Furthermore, eight NAU disciplines rank in the world’s top 1% by Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Agricultural Science and Botany are in the top 0.1% globally — a threshold very few universities reach (China Admissions, n.d.).
Beyond rankings, NAU runs joint programs with UC Davis, Reading University (UK), the University of Western Australia, and Massey University (New Zealand). It also hosts the NAU-Cornell International Technology Transfer Center on campus (ISAC Teach, 2024). The international research connections are genuine.
For students in food science, environmental biology, agri-tech, or veterinary medicine — these details matter considerably.
What a Typical Week Looks Like
Most international degree programs at Nanjing Agricultural University run in English. However, all international students take mandatory Chinese language courses — three sessions per week for the first two years (Sangenbd, n.d.). This sounds like a requirement. In practice, it becomes one of the more useful parts of the experience.
A typical day starts early. Canteen breakfast costs 10–15 RMB. Options include rice porridge, steamed buns, eggs, and soy milk. Lunch runs 15–25 RMB. The food is varied, regional, and surprisingly good.
Afternoons often involve lab work. Graduate students especially split time between field plots and modern research facilities. That combination — fieldwork and advanced infrastructure under one roof — is part of what makes the program distinctive.
Evenings are social. Campus clubs cover Chinese painting, calligraphy, music, and sports. The annual International Culture Festival brings together students from over 60 countries for performances, food, and shared activities (BestEduChina, n.d.). It’s the kind of event that builds real community.
Nanjing: The City Behind the University
Nanjing is not Beijing. It’s not Shanghai. For most students, that turns out to be an advantage.
The city was once the capital of the Ming Dynasty. Today it retains that layered identity — 14th-century city walls, Purple Mountain, Xuanwu Lake, and the historic Qinhuai River district are part of daily life here, not just tourist stops. For an international student trying to understand China, Nanjing is a genuinely instructive place to live.
Moreover, Shanghai is only 75 minutes away by high-speed rail (Elmevira, 2025). Weekend trips are easy, affordable, and frequent.
The metro connects NAU to the city center. A single ride costs 2–5 RMB. Taxis start at 9 RMB. Overall, Nanjing ranks among China’s more affordable major cities — estimated monthly costs for a single person sit around $500 USD, excluding rent (Numbeo, 2026).
Costs: A Realistic Monthly Budget
Here’s what students typically spend per month at NAU:

Scholarships: Three Funding Sources, Rarely Explained Together
Three main scholarship routes exist for international students at Nanjing Agricultural University. Most English-language guides cover only one or two.
1. CSC-NAU Scholarship (Chinese Government Scholarship) Full tuition waiver. Free on-campus accommodation. Monthly stipend of 2,500 RMB (undergrad), 3,000 RMB (master’s), or 3,500 RMB (PhD). Medical insurance included. Applications typically open in October for the following academic year (College of International Education, NAU, 2025).
2. NAU International Student Scholarship NAU’s own merit-based program. Covers tuition and, in some cases, accommodation. Available for undergraduate, postgraduate, and advanced students (NAU Scholarship PDF, n.d.).
3. Nanjing Government Scholarship Established by the Nanjing Municipal Government. Covers tuition and accommodation for outstanding international students enrolled at Nanjing universities. Deadlines typically fall between March and September (Greatyop, 2026).
Worth applying to all three — eligibility criteria differ, and some students qualify for more than one.
Key Steps to Apply
The process is mainly online. Here’s what to prepare:
- Check programs at NAU’s official admissions page: coieen.njau.edu.cn
- Gather documents: valid passport, academic transcripts, language certificate (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 for English programs), health certificate, and two reference letters for postgraduate applicants
- Submit your application via NAU’s international student online portal
- For scholarship applicants: additionally apply through the CSC online system (select Category B — university route)
- After acceptance: receive your admission notice and JW202 form, then apply for a student visa (X1 or X2) at the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate
Applications for September enrollment typically open from November through April.
Practical Tips Before You Arrive
A few things that make a real difference:
- Download WeChat before landing. Payments, campus notices, transport apps, and social life all run through it in China.
- Request airport pickup in advance. NAU arranges group transfers from Nanjing Lukou International Airport during registration periods — but at least three days’ notice is required (Sangenbd, n.d.).
- The volunteer system works. International student volunteers registered with the College of International Education meet new arrivals, help with SIM cards, and assist with campus registration (Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, 2019).
- Open a Chinese bank account early. Scholarship stipends and daily payments go through local accounts. The process is straightforward with a passport and student ID.
- Take Chinese classes seriously. Off-campus, English gets you only so far. Even basic conversational Mandarin changes the experience substantially.
A Final Note
Nanjing Agricultural University rewards students who are genuinely interested in what it offers. It’s not the right fit for everyone. But for students focused on agricultural science, food technology, environmental biology, or veterinary medicine, few universities provide this combination — research depth, international collaboration, affordable costs, and a city worth living in.
The campus is well-equipped. The city is walkable and connected. The academic environment is serious without being inaccessible.
