To study at Northeast Agricultural University is to join a school that was farming in Harbin before the People’s Republic existed. NEAU opened in 1948 as Northeast Agricultural College, the first regular agricultural college founded by the Communist Party, and its first president, Liu Da, was also Harbin’s first mayor. Today it is a Project 211 university and a Double First-Class school, with animal husbandry as its world-class discipline (Northeast Agricultural University, n.d.-a).

So why do so few foreign applicants know the name? Mostly because the English information about it is thin, old or quietly wrong. Agency listings quote fees thousands of yuan above the university’s own table, for example, and HSK score cut-offs that the official guide does not ask for. This guide sticks to what NEAU itself publishes: fees, the language bar, the new admission test for undergraduates, the scholarships and life in Harbin.

Why Study at Northeast Agricultural University: Farming on Black Soil

211 and Double First-Class status, without the spin

NEAU joined Project 211 in 1996. It is not a 985 school. It entered the first round of the Double First-Class programme in 2017 and kept its place in the second round in 2022. It is also the only Double First-Class agricultural university in China’s northeast, and the only Double First-Class school run by Heilongjiang province (Northeast Agricultural University, n.d.-a).

Animal husbandry leads, and the rest is broader than the name

Animal husbandry is the flagship. The Animal Science and Technology College traces back to 1948, and its discipline was named world-class in 2017 (College of Animal Science and Technology, n.d.). Around it the university groups veterinary medicine and food science and engineering, which together cover the whole path from livestock to dairy shelf.

Yet the “agricultural” label undersells the spread. NEAU runs 17 colleges and 76 undergraduate majors, with nine fields in the ESI global top 1% and two of them in the top 1‰. The majors open to international undergraduates include computer science, software engineering, finance and accounting alongside agronomy and veterinary medicine. It is a similar story at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan and China Agricultural University in Beijing.

A campus built for cold-region farming

The grounds cover about 501 hectares. That scale matters in Heilongjiang, where the fertile black soil and short, cold growing season give research here a focus most southern schools cannot copy. Soybean science is one example — the university runs its own soybean research institute. The school also hosts a Ministry of Education international joint laboratory on black-soil health in cold regions.

Degrees taught in Chinese, with a few English doctorates

Here is the first thing to get straight. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees for international students are taught in Chinese. Bachelor’s degrees run four years, although veterinary medicine takes five, and master’s degrees take three. English appears at doctoral level, where animal husbandry, clinical veterinary medicine, food science, grain and oil engineering, and horticulture can be taken in Chinese or English over four years (Northeast Agricultural University College of International Culture and Education [NEAU ICAE], 2025a).

Language requirements, and the numbers that are not on the guide

The official 2026 guide asks for a valid HSK 4 certificate for Chinese-taught majors. It does not print a minimum score. Several agency listings, however, quote HSK 4 at 195 for science and 210 for economics and management, plus HSK 5 for the humanities. Those figures may reflect older rules or the way a department screens files. Either way, ask the college in writing before you plan around a number.

The CSCA test, documents and deadlines

Undergraduates now face one extra step. NEAU requires a China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) score report, and each major lists its subjects — Chinese for science or humanities, mathematics, and physics or chemistry. For the 2026 intake, applications ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 May 2026, and CSCA scores were due by the same date (NEAU ICAE, 2025b). Our guide to the CSCA exam covers how the test works.

  • Passport valid beyond the September intake
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (results valid for six months)
  • HSK or TOEFL/IELTS certificate
  • Non-criminal record certificate
  • Graduate applicants: a study plan of at least 1,000 words and two letters from professors or associate professors

Age limits apply, and they are strict on paper: 18–25 for a bachelor’s, under 35 for a master’s, under 40 for a doctorate.

Scholarships and Tuition at Northeast Agricultural University

  • Campus housing: 500 CNY a month in a double room, 1,000 CNY in a single

  • Application fee: 400 CNY, paid only after admission

These come from the college’s fee page (NEAU ICAE, n.d.). Third-party sites quote 21,800 CNY and up for a bachelor’s, probably because they add their own service costs. Pay the university directly, and the lower figure is what applies.

Scholarship options and their windows

The Chinese Government Scholarship comes in two forms. Type A goes through a Chinese embassy, and it is the only type open to undergraduates. Type B goes through NEAU itself, under agency code 10224, and the “High-Level Postgraduate” track ran from 1 November 2025 to 15 March 2026. It covers tuition, housing and medical insurance, and pays 3,000 CNY a month to master’s students and 3,500 to doctoral students (NEAU ICAE, 2025a).

There is also a newer award. Starting in 2026, the Ministry of Education and Heilongjiang province fund a Eurasian Countries Scholarship for students from 13 countries: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Mongolia. Living in Harbin While You Study at Northeast Agricultural University

A small international community, run from its own building

NEAU is not a crowded international campus. The college reports about 300 international students from 44 countries. The college has its own 35,000 m² complex with a teaching block and an apartment block. It has also run a Sino-Russian joint programme since 1995, the first of its kind in Heilongjiang (NEAU ICAE, n.d.-b).

Cost of living and the winter

The college suggests about 1,200 CNY a month for living costs. That is a floor rather than a comfortable budget, though Harbin is one of the cheaper provincial capitals, so the gap is smaller than it would be in Beijing or Shanghai. Neighbours in Xiangfang

Xiangfang District is a university quarter. Northeast Forestry University, which grew partly out of NEAU’s own forestry department, is close by. Harbin Institute of Technology and Harbin Engineering University are across town, so the student scene is larger than NEAU’s numbers suggest.
