To study at Anhui University is to sit between two things that rarely share a campus: a materials-science lab feeding China’s chip and display industry, and a reading room holding 1,167 Warring States bamboo slips. The university opened in 1928 in Anqing, moved to Hefei in 1956, joined Project 211 in 1996, and has been a national Double First-Class university since 2017 (Anhui University, n.d.-a).

So why does this guide exist? Because applicants keep reading “211, not 985” as a verdict. It is not. It tells you the school is nationally funded but not famous abroad — which, in Hefei, comes with a specific set of advantages and one real trade-off. 211 and Double First-Class status

Anhui University entered Project 211 in 1996, became a joint Ministry of Education and provincial university in 2013, and has been listed in the national Double First-Class programme since 2017 (Anhui University, n.d.-a). It holds one world-class construction discipline, two national key disciplines, and thirteen subjects inside the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators — four of them in the top 0.2%.

Academic strengths: materials science and its neighbours

Materials science is the listed discipline, and the cluster around it is the real draw. The campus hosts a national key laboratory for optoelectronic information acquisition and protection, a strong-light-and-magnetism test facility, and a joint research institute for advanced integrated-circuit materials tied to the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Centre (Anhui University, n.d.-a).

Chemistry, engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics and environmental science all sit in that ESI top 1% band too. If your research touches sensors, magnetic materials, driver systems for electric vehicles or millimetre-wave chips, the neighbouring group is probably in the next building.

The other half: Huizhou studies and the bamboo slips

Now the part almost no English-language guide mentions. The university runs a Ministry of Education key research base for Huizhou studies — the archives, genealogies and merchant documents of old southern Anhui — and has published more than 200 volumes from that work.

It also holds 1,167 Warring States bamboo slips. Scholars there have identified early versions of the Book of Songs and the Analects, plus lost pieces of the Chuci anthology (Anhui University, n.d.-a). For a humanities applicant, that collection is a reason to choose this school over a bigger name. It is not a museum loan. It is the department’s own material.

Application routes

Three doors, and they do not open at the same time.

  • Chinese Government Scholarship, university programme (Type B). Master’s and doctoral applicants only. You apply through the China Scholarship Council system with agency code 10357, and the 2025–2026 window ran 15 January to 15 March, Beijing time (Anhui University School of International Education, 2024).
  • The Silk Road programme. Restricted to applicants from ten partner countries, and limited to a bachelor’s in international economy and trade or a master’s in international trade (Anhui University School of International Education, 2025).
  • Self-funded degree study. Handled directly by the School of International Education, on its own calendar.

Language requirements

For Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral programmes, the bar is HSK level 5 with a score of 210 or above. For English-taught programmes, applicants who are not native English speakers submit TOEFL 75 or IELTS 6.0 (Anhui University School of International Education, 2024). The Silk Road route sets HSK 4 at 220 for the bachelor’s programme and HSK 5 for the master’s, and it allows one preparatory language year for candidates who fall short (Anhui University School of International Education, 2025).

Documents and the supervisor letter

Expect the standard file: passport page, notarised highest diploma, full transcripts from undergraduate level onward, a study plan of 1,000 words or more, two academic references, a police clearance certificate issued within the previous six months, and the Foreigner Physical Examination Form, valid for six months only.

One item catches people out. Scholarship applicants need a signed supervisor acceptance form stamped by the department, plus a pre-admission letter from the School of International Education (Anhui University School of International Education, 2024). Start emailing supervisors in autumn, not in March. Age limits apply as well: under 35 for master’s study, under 40 for doctoral study.

What the scholarships cover

The Silk Road award is a full scholarship: tuition, a twin room in the dormitory, comprehensive medical insurance and a living allowance (Anhui University School of International Education, 2025). The Type B government scholarship works the same way, though holders must pass an annual review to keep it, and the award cannot be transferred to another university once you arrive.

What you still pay

The scholarship application fee is CNY 400, paid by bank transfer before your file is reviewed (Anhui University School of International Education, 2024). Self-funded tuition varies by level and by programme, and the published rate belongs to the programme page rather than to any third-party listing site — ask the School of International Education for the current figure in writing. Anhui rates generally sit below Beijing and Shanghai, which is much of the point.

Living in Hefei When You Study at Anhui University

Campuses and housing

The university spreads across four campuses in Hefei. The older Qingyuan and Longhe sites sit inside the city; the large Jianghuai campus lies out in the economic development zone, near Jiulong Road. Check which campus your programme actually uses before you sign anything — the commute between them is real. Dormitory places are allocated by the international office, with twin rooms as the default.

Cost of living and city life

Hefei is a provincial capital of roughly ten million people that spent the last decade turning into a manufacturing and research hub. Getting around and getting out

The metro reaches all four campuses, and Hefei South is a high-speed hub: Nanjing in about an hour, Shanghai in two and a half, Beijing in under four. Huangshan is close enough for a weekend, and so are the old villages of Hongcun and Xidi — which, conveniently, is also where the Huizhou archives came from.

Visiting the Anhui University Campus

Chinese campuses check identification at the gate, so carry your passport if you want a look before you apply. The landmarks are modest — the library, the Stony Brook joint college building, the magnetism facility — and the nameplate on the gate is worth a photograph, since Mao Zedong wrote it on 16 September 1958, a date the university still keeps as its founding anniversary.
