Study at Xinjiang University: China’s Gateway to Central Asia

To study at Xinjiang University is to sit about 2,400 kilometres from Beijing and rather closer to Kazakhstan. That single fact shapes everything else. The university was founded in July 1924, and it turned one hundred in September 2024. It was also the first institution of higher education in Xinjiang (Xinjiang University, n.d.-b). Today it is a Project 211 school and a Double First-Class university. Above all, though, it is China’s most serious academic bridge to Central Asia.

That orientation is the reason to come, and the reason to think carefully. So this guide covers the real disciplines, the published fees, the HSK bar, the scholarship routes, and what Ürümqi is actually like to live in. It also tells you where the university is genuinely strong — and where it is not.

Why Study at Xinjiang University: the Central Asia Angle

211 and Double First-Class status

Let us be precise, because English-language pages routinely are not. Xinjiang University joined Project 211 in 1997, and back in 1978 it was named one of the country’s national key universities (Xinjiang University, n.d.-b). It is not a Project 985 school. Weigh that honestly against the top universities in China if a famous name is what you are buying.

The Double First-Class picture is where the real signal sits. The Ministry of Education published the second round in 2022. Exactly three disciplines here made the national list: Marxist Theory, Chemistry, and Computer Science and Technology (Ministry of Education, 2022). Note what is absent. Chemical Engineering is not among them. That one belongs to Shihezi and Ningxia, and agent websites confuse the two constantly.

Academic strengths: chemistry, computing, arid-zone science

Ten disciplines now sit in the global top 1% by ESI. They include chemistry, engineering, materials science, computer science, and environment and ecology (Xinjiang University, n.d.-a). That is a respectable spread for a western Chinese university. Nor is it a rankings trick.

The flagship lab makes the logic obvious. In 2021 the university won approval for a State Key Laboratory of Chemistry and Utilization of Carbon-Based Energy Resources (Ministry of Science and Technology, 2021). Xinjiang sits on enormous coal and energy reserves. Consequently the chemistry that is nationally ranked here is the chemistry the region actually needs. Research follows resources, and here they are in the same place.

Location and the Silk Road pipeline

Now the genuinely distinctive part. The university states its mission as “based in Xinjiang, serving the west, facing the nation, radiating to Central Asia” (Xinjiang University, n.d.-a). That is not decorative language. It runs a China–Central Asia Education Exchange and Cooperation Center. It also hosts a China–Kazakhstan joint research centre and a Central Asia and Russia research base. Furthermore it belongs to the SCO University network, and it operates Confucius Institutes in Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

There is a Russian Center and an official Russian-language test site. Internship links run to universities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. So if your career points toward Central Asia, energy, or Belt and Road trade, few reasons to study at Xinjiang University are stronger than simple geography. If it does not, this is a narrow proposition — and you should admit that now, not in year two.

One more quality signal, often missed. Since 2010 a consortium of sixteen universities, led by Tsinghua, has jointly supported the university under China’s paired-assistance programme (Xinjiang University, n.d.-a). That brings real teaching and research weight west.

Admissions: How to Apply to Xinjiang University

Application routes

Two main doors. You either fund yourself, or you win a scholarship. Usefully, the university enrols Chinese Government Scholarship students under its own authority, as CSC agency 10755 (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2025). Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid ordinary passport. They must also be aged 18 to 45, in good health, with a clean record (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2026a).

Language requirements

For Chinese-taught degrees the bar is published plainly. Bachelor’s applicants need HSK Level 4 with at least 180 points. Master’s and doctoral applicants need HSK Level 5, also at 180 or above. Non-degree language students need no HSK at all (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2026a).

You can also skip Chinese — but only at postgraduate level. English-taught master’s and doctoral programmes run in selected science and engineering fields, and they ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. There is no English-taught undergraduate degree here. Plan accordingly, because that catches applicants out.

Documents and deadlines

For the 2026 self-funded intake, applications ran from 1 March to 15 May, with registration in September; degree students enter in September only. The CSC route closes far earlier — its 2026 deadline fell on 8 February (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2025, 2026a). Deadlines shift each cycle, however, so always confirm on the admissions page rather than trusting a summary like this one.

Expect to supply a passport copy, transcripts and your diploma. Then add a health examination record, a non-criminal record certificate, a language certificate and a financial guarantee. Scholarships and Tuition at Xinjiang University

Tuition and fees

The published 2026 annual tuition, in RMB, splits by subject (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2026a):

  • Bachelor’s: ¥15,000 humanities / ¥18,000 science and engineering
  • Master’s, Chinese-taught: ¥25,000 / ¥28,000 — English-taught adds roughly ¥2,000
  • Doctoral, Chinese-taught: ¥30,000 / ¥33,000 — English-taught ¥32,000 / ¥35,000
  • Language students: ¥6,500 per semester
  • Dormitory: ¥600 a month shared, ¥900 single. Application fee ¥400

Those are low numbers by Chinese standards, and strikingly low against the coast. The brochure estimates living costs around ¥1,000 a month, which is plausible for Ürümqi.

Scholarship options

Three routes matter. Most funded students who study at Xinjiang University arrive on a Chinese Government Scholarship, which covers tuition, accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly stipend. Nationally that stipend runs ¥2,500 for undergraduates, ¥3,000 for master’s and ¥3,500 for doctoral students (Beijing Municipal Government, 2024). Master’s applicants must be 35 or under, doctoral applicants 40 or under.

Second, and distinctive to this university, the Xinjiang People’s Government Scholarship targets students from neighbouring countries. It waives tuition and campus accommodation and pays ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 a month by level (Xinjiang University International College of Cultural Exchange, 2026b). Living in Ürümqi as an International Student

Campus and housing

The university runs an Ürümqi campus and a Kashgar campus, and the Ürümqi site splits across three grounds: Honghu, Youhao and Boda (Xinjiang University, n.d.-a). International students sit at Honghu, at 666 Shengli Road. Handily, the metro has a station named after the university. Ignore older English pages that talk about “north” and “south” campuses; the naming has moved on.

Cost of living

Ürümqi is cheap. Crowd-sourced comparisons put its overall cost of living at roughly half of Beijing’s, with rent dramatically lower (Numbeo, 2026). Treat that as indicative rather than precise — the sample is small. Even so, the direction is not in doubt, and the dormitory rates above confirm it.

The two clocks, and the wider region

Here is the practical quirk nobody warns you about. All of China officially runs on Beijing time, Xinjiang included. Locally, though, people commonly work to an unofficial “Xinjiang time” two hours behind. So an appointment at nine may mean nine on either clock. Always ask which one. Meanwhile the region itself is spectacular — the Tianshan mountains are a World Heritage Site and sit on your doorstep.

Conclusion: Is Xinjiang University Worth It?

The decision to study at Xinjiang University turns on one question: what do you want the degree to do? If you want a globally famous name, this is not it, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The brand is regional, the location is remote, and the international student body is small — a few hundred among more than forty thousand.

But if your interests point west — Central Asian trade, Russian, energy chemistry, arid-zone ecology — the calculation changes sharply. You would study cheaply, at a Double First-Class university, in the Chinese city closest to the markets you care about, inside a network that reaches Almaty and Bishkek rather than Boston. That is a genuinely unusual position to hold.
