CIFTIS 2026: The Fair for Selling Services, Not Goods

CIFTIS 2026 opens in Beijing on Wednesday 9 September and runs to Sunday 13 September, and it is the fair almost no foreign buyer has heard of. The Canton Fair sells goods. The China International Import Expo buys them. CIFTIS trades services — software, logistics, design, education, health, finance, engineering — which is the half of China’s economy that rarely arrives in a shipping container.

The numbers this year are not small. Ninety countries, regions and international organisations are taking part, with more than 1,800 enterprises exhibiting on site, among them 456 Fortune Global 500 companies and industry leaders (Beijing Municipal People’s Government, 2026a). All of it sits inside a converted steelworks in western Beijing.

What CIFTIS 2026 Actually Is

The fair is co-hosted by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the Beijing municipal government. It launched in 2012 as the Beijing Fair, took its current English name at the end of the decade, and now describes itself as the world’s largest comprehensive trade fair for services.

That claim rests on scope rather than floor space. Where a goods fair shows you products, this one shows you capabilities — a hospital group, a cloud provider, an engineering consultancy, a university, a football league. The Global Services Trade Summit runs alongside it, co-hosted this year with UNCTAD and WIPO.

The Nine Thematic Exhibitions at CIFTIS 2026

A main thematic exhibition sits at the centre, and nine sector shows surround it (Ministry of Commerce, 2026). They are worth reading as a map of where China wants its service exports to go.

  • Telecoms, computing and information services — satellite internet, 6G, quantum technology, and applied AI.
  • Financial services — built this year around AI in banking and insurance.
  • Culture and tourism services — heritage, cultural exports and the travel trade.
  • Education services — with a first-time zone for cross-border education and overseas campuses.
  • Sports services — rights, sponsorship and IP, plus AI broadcast technology.
  • Health and wellness services — expanded to 7,500 square metres, with a new medical technology section.
  • Engineering consulting and construction — urban renewal, smart building, green building.
  • Transport and business services — logistics and the professional services around it.
  • Environment and energy services — the low-carbon transition and the circular economy.

Four of those — telecoms, sports, transport and education — also host a “going global” services zone, aimed at Chinese firms selling abroad. That is the section a foreign partner or distributor should walk first.

Why CIFTIS 2026 Matters Outside China

Services are the gap in the trade story

Most coverage of Chinese trade counts containers. Yet the fastest-moving deals of the past few years have been service deals: cloud contracts, engineering procurement, medical tourism, licensing, education partnerships. Those rarely show up in a goods-export headline.

So CIFTIS is the one week a year when that side of the economy stands in one place and takes meetings. If your business sells expertise rather than pallets, this is a better fit than the Canton Fair playbook suggests.

The three fairs, split cleanly

Think of them as a triangle. The 140th Canton Fair in Guangzhou this October is where China sells goods outward. CIIE 2026 in Shanghai each November is where China buys goods inward. CIFTIS is the services corner, and it is the one with the thinnest foreign attendance.

Thin attendance cuts both ways, of course. Fewer foreign visitors means less competition for a stand’s attention, and it also means fewer peers to compare notes with over lunch.

Getting Into CIFTIS 2026: Dates, Tickets and ID

The five days split into two kinds. Wednesday to Friday, 9 to 11 September, are the professional days, priced at 20 CNY for a single day or 50 CNY for all three. Saturday and Sunday, 12 and 13 September, are open to the public, free, with a reservation required (Beijing Municipal People’s Government, 2026b).

Two details catch visitors out. Admission closes at 16:00 each day, so an afternoon arrival can waste the trip. And you must bring the original identity document used in the booking — for a foreign visitor, that means the passport, not a photo of it.

Shougang Park, the Venue Worth Arriving Early For

The fair has a permanent home at Shougang Park, the decommissioned Shougang steelworks in western Beijing. Blast furnaces, cooling towers and ore hoppers still stand; the exhibition halls are built around them. The ski jump from the 2022 Winter Olympics sits on the same site.

Practically, this year’s site has six entry halls with metro signage, more than 2,800 dining seats inside the security perimeter, twenty-plus ride-hailing pick-up points and six volunteer stations. What Is New at CIFTIS 2026

The headline change is a “China Services” zone, placed for the first time in the core of the thematic exhibition, showing what different provinces and cities offer rather than what individual firms sell. Regional sourcing questions get answered faster there than on the show floor.

Expect more than 200 product and result launches, over 100 of them debuting globally or in China for the first time, plus close to a hundred forums grouped under open integration, win-win cooperation, digital innovation and green development. The conference programme, not the stands, is where most delegates spend their second day.

Who CIFTIS 2026 Is Actually For

Buyers and sellers of services

The obvious audience is a company with something intangible to trade: software, logistics, testing, design, translation, medical services, training. Chinese providers in those fields are export-hungry and comparatively hard to find from abroad, since they do not list on the big product marketplaces.

Sourcing agents benefit too, though indirectly. Freight, inspection and compliance firms all exhibit here, and a supplier trip built on our notes for a China sourcing trip is easier to staff once you have met them face to face.

Students, universities and anyone in education

The education hall is unusually relevant this year, because it opens a dedicated zone for cross-border education — two-way student mobility, overseas campuses and teaching technology. University staff scouting partnerships will find more counterparts here in one afternoon than in a month of emails.

Anyone in Beijing that weekend

The public days cost nothing, and the venue alone justifies the trip. Robots, medical technology and the tourism hall make it a genuinely good Saturday, particularly with children. Book the free reservation early, though, because the weekend fills.

How to Work the Fair If You Only Have a Day

  • Pick two thematic halls, not nine. The site is a former steel plant, and walking it end to end costs hours.
  • Book meetings before you fly. The organisers run an online matching platform for pre-arranged negotiations.
  • Go on a professional day if you are buying. The weekend is livelier and much less useful.
  • Bring bilingual cards. Stand staff at a services fair are often technical, not commercial.
