The 140th Canton Fair 2026: Phases, What’s New, How to Prepare
The 140th Canton Fair runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026 in Guangzhou, and if you intend to be there, the useful work happens now — not in October. Badges, flights and hotel rooms all get scarce well before the doors open. August and September are when serious buyers lock things down.
This is a preview, not a recap. Below: the three phases, what has changed this session, and a practical order of operations for getting yourself into the halls.
The 140th Canton Fair Calendar, Phase by Phase
The fair is not one continuous event. It splits into three five-day blocks, with gaps between them for tearing down one set of halls and building the next.
- Phase 1 — 15 to 19 October 2026. Theme: Advanced Manufacturing.
- Phase 2 — 23 to 27 October 2026. Theme: Quality Home Life.
- Phase 3 — 31 October to 4 November 2026. Theme: Better Life.
The dead days matter as much as the live ones. Booth dismantling and setup occupy 20 to 22 October and 28 to 30 October (Canton Fair, 2026a). Nothing is open to buyers then. Book a flight that lands on the 21st expecting to walk a hall, and you will spend the day looking at forklifts.
Phase dates come from the official Canton Fair International Pavilion schedule and from the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto’s announcement of the session (Consulate General of China in Toronto, 2026a). Both agree.
What Sits in Each Phase
Picking the wrong phase is the classic first-timer error. The categories do not overlap much.
Phase 1 — Advanced Manufacturing. Machinery, industrial automation, new energy vehicles, hardware, electronics and appliances. The consulate briefing describes this phase as oriented “toward new,” and it carries a fresh service robots zone showcasing AI applications (Consulate General of China in Toronto, 2026b).
Phase 2 — Quality Home Life. Building materials, furniture, ceramics, kitchenware, tableware, home decorations, festival products, gifts, glass artware, clocks and watches, gardening, weaving and rattan. Building and furniture sections each exceed 130,000 square metres.
Phase 3 — Better Life. Clothing, underwear, sportswear, textiles, shoes, cases and bags, home textiles, carpets, food, personal care, medical devices, pet products, toys, kids’ wear, office supplies and baby goods.
One detail worth knowing: the International Pavilion, where overseas exhibitors show, opens only in Phase 2 and Phase 3 this session (Canton Fair, 2026a). If your interest is imported product rather than Chinese export supply, Phase 1 is not your week.
Scale: Still the Largest Thing of Its Kind
The headline numbers are steady rather than dramatic. Total exhibition area holds at 1.55 million square metres across 75,700 booths, spread over 54 professional sections (China News Service, 2026). More than 30,000 enterprises take part, roughly 2,800 of them brand companies, with about a third classified as high-tech or specialised firms (Consulate General of China in Toronto, 2026b).
Numbers that large stop meaning much after a point. What they translate to on the ground is simple: you cannot walk it all. A single phase is already more floor than most people cover properly in five days. Plan for depth in two or three sections, not breadth across fifty.
The session also carries an anniversary flavour. The official logo runs the span “1957–2026” beneath the number 140, under the theme “Connecting the World, Mutual Benefit for All” (China News Service, 2026). Nearly seventy years of the same event, twice a year.
What Is New at the 140th Canton Fair
Four new zones stand out, and they track fairly closely with where Chinese manufacturing is currently pushing:
- Service robots — in Phase 1, presented as a showcase of applied AI.
- Smart wearables — continuing the consumer electronics expansion.
- Fashion accessories — framed around new materials and Chinese design.
- Smart healthcare — in Phase 3, with diagnostic and rehabilitation equipment.
Drones and integrated or prefabricated housing also feature prominently among the products the organisers are highlighting (China News Service, 2026). Some of these zones were already emerging at the 139th session in spring. What is different is that several have graduated from experiment to standing fixture.
Whether a new zone is worth your time depends entirely on your category. But if you last attended two or three years ago, the electronics and robotics halls will not look like you remember.
Where the Fair Happens: Pazhou, Guangzhou
Everything takes place at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Pazhou, Haizhu District, Guangzhou — No. 382 Yuejiang Zhong Road, postcode 510335 (Canton Fair, 2026a). The complex sits directly on the Pearl River, which makes it easy to spot and easy to orient yourself around.
The venue is one of the largest exhibition complexes in the world, with metro stations serving it directly (Wikipedia, 2026). Take the metro. Taxi queues after closing time at Pazhou are their own small ordeal, and the roads around the complex clog badly on opening days.
Hotels split roughly into three tiers: on-island Pazhou properties at a premium, Zhujiang New Town across the river for comfort and restaurants, and cheaper options further out that cost you an hour a day. Book by September and you get a choice. Book in October and you get what is left.
Badges and Pre-Registration for the 140th Canton Fair
Overseas buyers register through the official buyer portal at buyer.cantonfair.org.cn (Canton Fair, 2026b). Pre-registration is open year-round now, which is a genuine improvement over the old rush window.
Do it early anyway. Pre-registered buyers collect a badge quickly on arrival; unregistered walk-ins queue, fill in forms and lose part of a morning. On a five-day phase, a lost morning is a real cost.
Register with the company details you actually trade under. Exhibitors scan your badge, and the badge is what determines whether you get treated as a buyer or a browser. A generic personal registration weakens you before you have said anything.

Visas and Entry: the August Task
This is the item that ruins trips when left late. Two broad routes exist for a trade visitor.

Check your own nationality against the current list rather than assuming, since the policy has been revised repeatedly.
Either way, sort it in August or early September. Consular processing times stretch as the fair approaches, and every autumn a few buyers discover this too late.
Planning Your Days
Most buyers attend one phase. Attending two means either a week of waiting in Guangzhou or an expensive extra flight. The waiting is not wasted, though — the gap days are good for factory visits.
A rough shape that works: two days walking your target sections and collecting cards, one day going back to the twenty booths that mattered, then the gap days on factory trips or Guangzhou wholesale markets. Book meetings before you fly. The exhibitor directory opens ahead of each phase, and a scheduled slot beats hoping someone senior is standing at the booth when you arrive.
Mornings run better than afternoons. Halls fill after lunch, sales staff get worn down, and by four in the afternoon you are competing for attention with everyone else who slept in. Start at opening, take the break in the middle of the day, then use late afternoon for the second visits where you already have a name to ask for.
Wear shoes you can stand in for eight hours. That sounds trivial. It is not — the complex is measured in kilometres of aisle, and physical fatigue quietly degrades your judgement by day three.
Homework Before You Fly
The fair rewards preparation more than most events, mainly because the volume is so high that unprepared visitors default to collecting brochures.

One habit that pays: photograph every business card next to the product it belongs to. By day three, twelve cards from twelve ceramics booths look identical, and memory is not going to rescue you.
Bring more cards than you think you need, printed with a company email rather than a free webmail address. It reads as a small thing. In practice it changes which follow-up emails get answered in the two weeks after the fair, when every exhibitor is working through a stack of leads.
And decide in advance what you are willing to sign. Some suppliers push for a proforma invoice at the booth. There is nothing wrong with that if the terms are what you wanted, but the halls are not a good environment for reading contract language carefully.

Is the 140th Canton Fair Worth the Trip?
Depends on what you are sourcing, and on whether you can commit the days. For commodity goods already well covered online, perhaps not — the catalogues are searchable from home.
But for anything where you need to handle the product, meet the people behind it, or compare thirty variants of the same thing in an afternoon, few events come close. The density is the point. Some buyers say one week here replaces months of remote screening, and that is probably not an exaggeration for categories with real physical variance.
Either way, the decision window is now. Pre-register, settle the visa question, book Pazhou-side accommodation, then work out which phase actually holds your products. The 140th Canton Fair opens on 15 October, and the halls will not wait.
